Visa Granted for Mother of Slain Bronx Teen After Mamdani-Trump Call
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced on Saturday that President Donald Trump has agreed to immediately grant a visa to the mother of Javits Frimpong, a 15-year-old Ghanaian boy who was shot dead in the Bronx.
The development follows a phone call between the mayor and the president. Javits’s mother, currently in Ghana, seeks to travel to the United States to mourn her son in person after he was killed while walking to school on Thursday morning, October 29, 2026.
Tragedy in the Claremont Neighborhood
CCTV footage captured harrowing moments of the 15-year-old sprinting through his Claremont neighborhood on Thursday around 9:25 a.m., according to police and law enforcement sources. Javits collapsed at East 171 Street and Third Avenue after taking a bullet to the stomach. He was transported to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Thousands of residents attended vigils held across the city for the teenager. Javits had immigrated to the US from Ghana just a year prior to join his father, Thomas Frimpong, 60, in pursuit of a better life. The elder Frimpong told The Post that his son had been bullied at 329 The DreamYard Preparatory School, expressing his belief that the bullying was tied to the fatal shooting. Police have not yet named a suspect or disclosed a motive, and no arrests have been made.
Ghanaian Officials Coordinate Visa Assistance for Mother
Following the tragedy, Ghanaian Foreign Minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa stated on social media that officials from Ghana are coordinating with local authorities in New York to assist Javits’s mother with her visa application. Securing the visa comes against the backdrop of strict immigration policies under the Trump administration, which has suspended the processing of visas from 75 countries.
Mamdani shared the news of the visa agreement on X, writing, “The murder of a child is a pain no parent should have to endure, let alone from thousands of miles away. Javits Frimpong’s mother deserves to say goodbye to her son in person. I just got off the phone with President Trump and he has agreed to grant her visa immediately.”
Every child in the Bronx deserves to walk to school without fearing for their life, and no parent should ever have to endure what Javits’s father, Thomas, is enduring now. — U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres Mr. Torres
While local officials and congressional representatives, including Bronx U.S. Representative Ritchie Torres, expressed public grief and demanded justice, the White House did not immediately respond to requests for confirmation. The investigation into the shooting remains active as local police continue to search for those responsible.
