Cleveland Crowd Routs LeBron James and the 76ers in 119-95 Defeat

LeBron James found out just how unforgiving Northeast Ohio can still be when he returned to face his former team. The Cleveland Cavaliers routed James and the Philadelphia 76ers 119-95 in an NBA Cup group stage game, locking down the 41-year-old veteran.

James managed just eight points on the night, finishing 3 of 12 from the field and missing all four of his three-point attempts over 31 minutes on the floor. It marked only the 10th time in 1,630 career NBA regular-season games that the four-time champion has been held to single-digit scoring. Compounding the offensive struggles, he committed six turnovers as the Cavaliers dismantled the visitors from the opening tip.

James, an Akron native who chose to sign with Philadelphia in the offseason rather than return to Cleveland for a third stint, cut a frustrated figure after the final buzzer. “Definitely not feeling a good rhythm offensively,” James said. “We didn’t look like much offensively. We had a couple spurts, but too many turnovers on my behalf.”

Boos in the First Half and a Noticeable Silence

Every time James touched the ball during the first half, a smattering of boos cascaded down from the Cleveland crowd. Unlike his visit last season—when the arena played a video tribute celebrating his 25 points during Game 5 of the 2007 Eastern Conference finals against the Detroit Pistons, reducing him to tears—there was no such video honor this time around.

James has experienced the full spectrum of emotions from Cleveland supporters across his 11 seasons spanning two stints with the franchise, his 2010 departure in free agency for the Miami Heat, his triumphant return in 2014, and his 2018 exit to join the Los Angeles Lakers. “At the end of the day, nothing can get as worse as December 2, 2010, from a reception standpoint,” James reflected. “I’ve seen them near the depths of hell when it comes to reception here all the way to the heavens above. So anything in between, it’s easy money.”

The lopsided result stood as James’ second-worst loss as a visiting player in Cleveland. Though he holds a 9-5 overall record in opposing uniforms on their floor, he has now dropped his last three trips. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Cleveland on March 1.

Looking Ahead After the 76ers Fall to 8-2

Philadelphia arrived with the best record in the NBA, but the blowout dropped them to 8-2 on the young season. Head coach Nick Nurse offered no excuses for the lackluster performance, pointing immediately to the bounce-back test awaiting them.

“We were lacklustre and they were very, very good. And I think we expected them to be very good tonight considering that they had a couple tough losses in a row,” Nurse said. “We were not very good. Probably once in a while that’s going to happen. Important thing is that we get over it and bounce back on Sunday.”

That turnaround arrives quickly with a matchup against the Chicago Bulls, leaving the 76ers little time to dwell on a difficult night in Ohio where one of basketball’s most enduring figures was pushed entirely out of his rhythm.
