Makayla Danner Unseats Longtime Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine
In a change for Douglas County’s legal leadership, voters have elected Makayla Danner as the new county attorney, ending Don Kleine’s two-decade tenure in the office. The result, confirmed following Tuesday’s election, marks a major transition for one of Nebraska’s most influential prosecutorial roles. As KMTV reported, the win represents a hard-fought outcome for Danner, who framed her candidacy around her personal history and deep ties to the local community.
Danner’s path to the office was defined by a grassroots approach that leaned heavily on direct engagement with voters. Throughout the campaign, she spent considerable time knocking on doors across the county to discuss her vision. While she acknowledged that reaching every household was a physical impossibility, the feedback she received during these interactions fueled her confidence leading into Election Day.
“Did I think my message resonated, yeah. But I can’t knock every door,” Danner said. “I knocked as many as I could. I thought the numbers were looking good on the doors I did knock, so I was always optimistic.”
A Background Shaped by North Omaha
For Danner, the victory carries a layer of personal significance that she has been vocal about throughout her campaign. Describing herself as a “poor kid that grew up in North Omaha,” she emphasized her journey from attending Burke High School to earning a full scholarship to Creighton University. As a first-generation college graduate, she positioned her return to the county as a commitment to public service.
Her approach to governance is influenced, she says, by the practical experience of raising five children. “So I’ve got 5 kids, and not two of them are alike,” Danner noted. “There’s nothing about them that’s the same, completely different perspectives. If there’s nothing about them that’s the same, then I know what’s happening in this world I can understand it.”

Shifting Dynamics in Douglas County
Danner’s success was one of two prominent Democratic victories in Douglas County on Tuesday. Alongside the attorney race, Mark Martinez successfully unseated incumbent Aaron Hanson in the contest for Douglas County sheriff. These results reflect a change in the county’s politics, as voters opted for new leadership in two of the most critical public safety offices.
The transition also brings an end to a notable streak regarding Danner’s own campaign headquarters. The office space she occupied had previously been used by two other candidates whose bids ended unsuccessfully. Danner stated that she remained undeterred by the building’s history, viewing her win as a way to finally break the cycle.

The Road Ahead for the Attorney’s Office
While the transition of power is now set in motion, the practical implications for the Douglas County Attorney’s Office remain the primary point of interest for residents and legal stakeholders. The office handles a vast array of responsibilities, from criminal prosecutions to civil matters involving the county government. Historically, the county attorney’s office has been central to shaping local justice policy, and Danner has stated that her primary goal is to serve all residents across the diverse communities of Douglas County.
Makayla Danner defeated incumbent Don Kleine to become the next Douglas County attorney. As she prepares to take office, the focus shifts to how her stated appreciation for varied perspectives will translate into specific prosecutorial priorities and administrative changes within the department.
