Baton Rouge is preparing a full month of civic observances this November to honor local service members, families, and caregivers, according to a schedule released Wednesday by brla.gov. Mayor-President Emile “Sid” Edwards, working alongside the Mayor’s Advisory Council on Veterans Affairs and Blue Star Mothers of Louisiana Chapter 1, has outlined community events that span from a downtown plaza kickoff to an annual breakfast gathering on Goodwood Boulevard.

Salute and Share Kicks Off November at Rhorer Plaza

Veterans Month officially opens on Friday, November 6, at 11 a.m. behind City Hall at Rhorer Plaza. Mayor-President Edwards will deliver opening remarks and issue a formal proclamation declaring November as Veterans Month in the parish. More than 60 Hometown Hero banners honoring local veterans will be displayed throughout downtown Baton Rouge.

The morning ceremony centers on the “Salute and Share” initiative. Organizers will plant 250 American flags in Rhorer Plaza, with each flag representing a year of American history. These markers were donated by the Blue Star Mothers of Baton Rouge and the Bogan Fire Museum. Following the ceremony, residents may take the flags home to display in recognition of Veterans Day.

Musical accompaniment for the opening event will be provided by the Florida Street Blowhards, who are scheduled to perform the “Armed Forces Medley” alongside selections of early jazz music.

“This is an opportunity for our community to come together, honor those who have worn our nation’s uniforms, and recognize the families who stand beside them,” Mayor-President Edwards stated in the announcement published by brla.gov. “We are proud to celebrate our veterans and ensure their service and sacrifice are never forgotten.”

Sixth Annual Mayor’s Veterans Breakfast on Goodwood Boulevard

The second major event on the calendar is the Sixth Annual Mayor’s Veterans Breakfast, scheduled for Tuesday, November 10, at 8:30 a.m. The gathering takes place at the Main Library located at 7711 Goodwood Boulevard.

Veterans, military families, community leaders, and supporters are invited to attend for a morning of fellowship and community appreciation. While the event is open to the public, registration is required in advance and can be completed online through the city’s portal at brla.gov/VeteransBreakfast.

Local officials, the Mayor’s Advisory Council on Veterans Affairs, and Blue Star Mothers of Louisiana Chapter 1 encourage residents, local businesses, and community organizations to participate in both events throughout the month. Anyone seeking further details regarding the scheduled observances can contact the administration directly via email at MayorsVeteranAffairs@brla.gov.
