Havre bridge study launched by state transit officials to evaluate rail yard crossing
Drivers, pedestrians, and regional freight haulers traveling through north-central Montana face a new planning phase for a critical local link. The Montana Department of Transportation and engineering consultant Morrison-Maierle have officially begun a study to evaluate options for replacing the aging 7th Avenue North bridge in Havre, mdtnews.mt.gov reported.
The structure carries vital daily traffic over the historic Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway yard, connecting the local community directly to U.S. Highway 2, surrounding northern areas, and the international border with Canada.
For daily commuters and regional commercial traffic, the bridge serves as an indispensable artery. State transportation officials emphasize that keeping this route viable remains central to regional mobility.
“The 7th Avenue North bridge is an important connection for Havre and the surrounding region,” said Jim Wingerter, MDT Great Falls District Administrator. “This study will ensure that the bridge continues to meet safety and transportation needs for those traveling between U.S. Highway 2, the communities to the north, and the Canadian border.”
Evaluating structural alignments and community impact
The project team faces a comprehensive review process. Engineers and planners will evaluate potential replacement options based on bridge design, alternative alignments, environmental impacts, right-of-way and utility needs, safety, operations, and existing traffic patterns.
The primary goal of the study is to identify a preferred replacement alternative alongside estimated costs for future design and construction phases. Yet, significant milestones remain unaddressed.

At this time, specific funding has not been identified, and no construction date has been scheduled.
State officials are actively seeking public participation as the evaluation moves forward. Residents, local business owners, and regional stakeholders are encouraged to stay informed, submit questions, and share comments with the project team. An upcoming open house will provide study details and gather direct community feedback once the schedule is finalized.
