Mississippi Landmarks to Light Up Teal for Alzheimer's Awareness

Landmarks across Mississippi will soon light up teal in honor of November being Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. As stated in a release from the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, this yearly countrywide campaign forms a component of their Light the World in Teal initiative, designed to bring visibility to Alzheimer’s disease and demonstrate backing for the millions impacted by it.

Illuminating Mississippi Landmarks for Alzheimer’s Support

Scheduled to glow teal on Monday, Nov. 2, locations across the state include the Mississippi Governor’s Mansion and the Pascagoula Street Tunnel in Jackson, Grammy Museum Mississippi in Cleveland, Biloxi City Hall and the Biloxi Lighthouse, the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center, the Round Island Lighthouse in Pascagoula, and Scarlet Pearl Casino in D’Iberville.

These sites join more than 1,750 locations worldwide in what the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America describes as the world’s largest-ever organized collective light-up for a single cause.

Every Light the World in Teal site, whether it’s a skyscraper, a stadium, or a small village hall, helps make Alzheimer’s more visible and encourages greater understanding and support for the millions of families affected by Alzheimer’s. These Mississippi sites are doing more than changing the color of a building. They are raising awareness and reminding everyone impacted by Alzheimer’s that they are not alone. We are grateful for their participation. — Charles J. Fuschillo Jr., AFA President and CEO

The Growing Scope of Alzheimer’s Disease in Mississippi

Beyond the upcoming illuminations, the initiative highlights a stark health care challenge facing the state and the nation. Nearly seven million Americans, including approximately 63,000 Mississippians, are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease. Projections from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that the total number of people with Alzheimer’s will double by the year 2060.

To support the cause throughout November, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America encourages individuals to wear teal and utilize social media platforms to raise further awareness.
