Missouri’s offense is about to get a massive injection of explosive power. Ahmad Hardy, the All-American running back who set a program record last season, is expected to make his season debut this Saturday night when the No. 23 Tigers travel to Fayetteville to face Arkansas. The news, first reported by CBS Sports insider Matt Zenitz and later confirmed to PowerMizzou, comes after the Mizzou squad was officially notified of Hardy’s intent to play following Thursday’s practice.
Hardy spent the early part of the 2026 season recovering from a gunshot wound sustained in May.
A different gear for the Tigers’ ground game
Last year, with Hardy as the focal point, the Tigers averaged 228.3 rushing yards per game, ranking eighth nationally. Hardy himself was a force of nature, racking up 1,649 yards and 16 touchdowns to secure All-American honors.

Since the start of this season, the Tigers have remained competitive, sitting at 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the SEC, but the efficiency has dipped. The rushing attack has fallen to 64th nationally and ninth in the SEC, averaging 161.3 yards per game. That’s a drop of more than 60 yards per contest compared to the Hardy-led offense of last year.
Jamal Roberts has stepped up admirably in Hardy’s absence. Roberts has run for 867 yards—the eighth-most in the nation and second-best in the SEC—along with eight touchdowns. Jamal Roberts has done well as the RB1, but the addition of Hardy provides another option that Arkansas will have to account for.
“We’re doing the best we can every single day to help this young man,” Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz said Tuesday night. “That’s the most important thing. When it’s time, it’s time. Might be this week, might be next week, might be December. We just don’t know.”
Managing the return in Fayetteville
Despite the excitement, Coach Drinkwitz has been careful not to rush the process. While Hardy fully returned to practice this week and was omitted from Wednesday’s initial availability report—a strong signal he is cleared for action—he is not expected to start on Saturday. Roberts will likely maintain his role as the primary starter, with Hardy integrated into the rotation as the game progresses.
The timing is ideal for both teams. Both Missouri and Arkansas are coming off a bye week, meaning the Tigers have had extra time to integrate Hardy into the game plan and the Razorbacks have had extra time to prepare for his return. Arkansas enters the matchup struggling at 3-4 overall and 1-3 in SEC play, creating a volatile environment where a returning superstar could be the deciding factor.

The primary question remaining is the volume of snaps. Because Hardy is returning from a significant injury, the coaching staff hasn’t specified exactly how much he will play.
The stakes for the SEC standings
Being ranked 23rd in both major polls puts them in a position to climb if they can rediscover the offensive dominance they enjoyed last year. A more prolific run game would allow the Tigers to better control the game when playing in a road environment like Fayetteville.
If Hardy can return to his previous form, the Tigers could improve a run game that has been less prolific and efficient this season. The gap between 64th in the country and 8th is wide, and Hardy is a player on the roster capable of bridging it.
The matchup kicks off Saturday at 6:45 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
