Downtown Madison Street Project Earns Grid Resilience Honor
Montpelier Municipal Utilities secured two separate honors and an individual safety recognition during the 2026 American Municipal Power Annual Conference.
The municipal utility picked up a System Improvement Award within the Grid Resilience category. The distinction honors public power initiatives that improve cybersecurity, strengthen disaster preparedness, or increase grid reliability.
That recognition specifically stemmed from the Downtown Madison Street Project. The endeavor modernized aging electric infrastructure throughout the heart of the village’s downtown commercial district while establishing a looped distribution system capable of routing power from multiple directions and circuits.
Transmission and Distribution Category Recognizes Accident-Free Year
In addition to the grid modernization honor, the utility received a Safety Award in the Transmission and Distribution category.
This designation acknowledges public power distribution divisions that complete a full year without any time loss due to reportable accidents.
Hard Hat Safety Award Slated for Unnamed Employee
Complementing the institutional awards, organizers announced that a utility employee will receive a Hard Hat Safety Award.
The distinction honors workers who maintain 100 percent safety consciousness, adhere strictly to operational safety procedures, and actively promote electrical safety within their respective departments. Utility leadership plans to announce the specific recipient at a later date.
AMP Leadership Emphasizes Culture of Protection Across Crews
“Safety must be a priority at every level of a utility, from leadership to the crews working in the field each day,” said Michelle L. Palmer, PE, AMP vice president of technical services and compliance. “We commend Montpelier Light & Power for its strong commitment to protecting its employees and fostering a culture of safety.”
