TellingPointy — News That Matters, Explained Clearly

Dairy farmers across 11 Northeast states can now apply for the Dairy Farm Improvement & Modernization Grant through the Northeast Dairy Business Innovation Center, with a total of $1,000,000 in funding available to support regional agricultural operations, Vermont Business Magazine reported.

The grant program aims to assist farms in upgrading outdated systems, increasing animal health and comfort, improving milk quality, and strengthening overall operational viability. Funding amounts range from $15,000 to $100,000 per project, requiring a 25% match in cash, in-kind contributions, or a combination of both.

Eligible Projects Must Improve Farm Systems

Applicants must demonstrate a systems-level approach to improving their farm operations. Proposals that merely replace aging equipment without broader system upgrades are ineligible for funding. Projects showing direct benefits to multiple farms, or those involving collaboration with technical service providers, may be more competitive during the review process.

Eligible projects may center on several core operational areas:

  • Feed and nutrition management
  • Animal health and comfort
  • Milking systems
  • Labor efficiency
  • Animal management
  • New and young farmer engagement
  • Farm transition
  • Cooperative milk production
  • Other initiatives benefiting dairy production

Eligible applicants include dairy farmers, milk buyers focusing on on-farm milk production or transfer, and producer associations or technical service providers applying on behalf of farmers.

Two-Stage Application Process Opens for 11 States

The application process utilizes a two-stage structure this year. Pre-applications opened on October 29 and will run through December 17. Following this initial window, a selected subset of applicants will receive invitations to submit full applications during the winter.

Grants are open to participants across the entire 11-state region served by the Northeast Dairy Business Innovation Center, which includes Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

The Northeast Dairy Business Innovation Center is hosted by the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets and receives its funding through the USDA-AMS. Further details and application documents are accessible directly through the Northeast Dairy Business Innovation Center grant portal, with broader organization information available on the NE-DBIC official website.
