New Baton Rouge Needlepoint Shop Red Stitch Builds Creative Community

Sarah Edgecomb Opens The Red Stitch on Jefferson Highway

Rainbow walls and sparkling threads have transformed a corner of the Jefferson Plaza shopping center, where Baton Rouge’s newest needlepoint shop officially opened its doors in August. Sarah Edgecomb launched The Red Stitch at 7517 Jefferson Highway to create more than just a retail storefront, aiming instead for a physical sanctuary centered on connection, open stitching classes, and mahjong events.

Edgecomb’s path to shop ownership began two summers ago at a lake house. After ordering an online kit and picking up a canvas, she immediately ordered three more. Drawing on her LSU finance degree and a background in business, she began exploring whether she could turn her newfound passion into a communal learning space.

Inside the shop, decorated with what Edgecomb describes as grandma’s couch-cushions coziness, visitors find hand-painted canvases featuring imaginative designs. Inventory ranges from a “Geaux Tigers” patch for football fans and a “Baby Sleeping” sign for new moms to collegiate sorority letter kits. Edgecomb refers to her patrons and learners as the Stitch Krewe.

“Everybody gets so excited about other people’s projects,” Edgecomb said. “There’s just dopamine hits as soon as you walk in the door. The colors are everywhere. I mean, how can you be unhappy in this store?”

Combating Screen Fatigue Through Focused Craft

While the reason behind the hobby’s sudden popularity is up for debate, Edgecomb points to the desire for a digital detox as a primary driver. She notes that people frequently find themselves trapped in endless smartphone scrolling loops and subconsciously crave tactile activities that offer the brain a genuine break.

Engaging in focused needlework keeps minds sharp while fostering interpersonal connections in a shared room, according to the shop’s owner. Participants feed off each other’s creative energy during open sessions.

“When I have an overwhelming day… I can sit down for 20 minutes and literally stitch just one full thread, and I can kind of get recentered,” Edgecomb said.

Prospective visitors and local stitchers seeking current schedules for classes and community events can find additional information directly through The Red Stitch.
