Cheyenne Book Lovers Gain a New Free Library Tailored for Teens and Adults
Cheyenne residents aged 15 to 35 now have a dedicated spot to discover their next read without opening their wallets, thanks to a newly opened Little Free Library on Windmill Road. According to reporting by Your Wyoming Link, the project aims to fill a noticeable gap in the local community for readers who have outgrown children’s collections but want an alternative to traditional, costlier retail options.
The newly established Whimsy Windmill Library sits at 2514 Windmill Road and is officially open to visitors. Created by local resident Megan Bonney, the neighborhood book exchange focuses entirely on young adult and adult literature rather than the children’s books typically found in similar small setups.
“I think a lot of the libraries I’ve been to around town have either been geared more towards children or an older audience,” Bonney told Your Wyoming Link. “I felt like there was a group of people that had a middle audience that wasn’t being accounted for.”
Filling the Gap for Young Adult Readers and BookTok Hits
Bonney designed the space specifically to serve readers ranging from teenagers to adults in their mid-30s. The shelves feature a curated mix of genres, including romance, fantasy, and thrillers, alongside titles popularized by BookTok, the vibrant book-focused community on TikTok where readers share recommendations and discuss trending literature.
“Young adult readers, probably of ages between 15 and about 35, is where I see those kinds of books are missing,” Bonney said.
Beyond genre preference, the initiative responds directly to contemporary economic pressures faced by younger demographics. Rising costs for consumer goods, including brand-new books, have made recreational reading an added expense for many households.
“People in our generation are really struggling financially,” Bonney noted. “And so, it would be a really nice place for us to have a spot where we can swap good reads.”
How the Whimsy Windmill Exchange Works
Visitors to 2514 Windmill Road can take a book, leave a book, or simply stop by to browse the collection. Leaving an item is never required to take one, though donations of young adult and adult books are welcomed to keep the shelves stocked for future visitors.
The exchange sits just a couple of houses away from another neighborhood book box located near Buffalo Ridge Elementary School, which primarily serves children. That nearby installation served as part of the inspiration for Bonney to build an alternative space catering to older demographics.
To mark the official opening, Bonney tucked a “Blind Date with a Book” mystery gift into the library. The title was provided by a friend at Willow Branch Books and designated for the very first visitor to claim it.
Bonney Decorates Library Exterior with Dragons and Fairies
Beyond providing affordable access to literature, the Whimsy Windmill Library was built to offer an imaginative escape from daily life. The physical structure features whimsical touches inspired by fantasy, including dragons and fairies. Bonney plans to update these decorations throughout the year to reflect upcoming holidays and keep the exterior engaging for passersby.
“I wanted it to be a place to escape reality,” Bonney said. “As far as books goes, like fantasy is a really fun part of it.”
Whether locals are searching for a romance novel, a high-stakes thriller, or the latest viral recommendation from social media, the new Windmill Road installation provides a community-driven hub for readers to share stories and connect with their neighbors.
