Nico O’Reilly waits as Manchester City weighs left-back choices
Back-to-back Premier League defeats have left Manchester City searching for answers across the pitch, with defensive errors and missed chances piling up. Enzo Maresca’s side fell 1-0 to Brighton at the Etihad Stadium following matches against Aston Villa. Amid the team’s dip in form, Josko Gvardiol’s performances at left-back have drawn scrutiny. The defender has struggled to close down opponents in tight spaces during both losses, leading observers to question whether fatigue has caught up with him.
Against Aston Villa, an Ibrahim Mbaye cross found space on the right wing that Gvardiol could not recover to cover in time. When City hosted Brighton, Gvardiol failed to shut down Maxim De Cuyper before the winger delivered the decisive cross for the game’s only goal. Neither moment stands out as a catastrophic error, yet both point to a player operating slightly below his usual peak. Having missed substantial time last season due to a serious leg injury, and following a demanding 2025-26 campaign capped by the World Cup, Gvardiol may benefit from a spell on the bench.
The case for Nico O’Reilly at left-back
Fortunately for Maresca, an internal solution is waiting on the sidelines. Nico O’Reilly served as Manchester City’s standout player last season while operating primarily at left-back, earning an England call-up for the World Cup last summer. Back spasms disrupted the early stages of his current campaign after he suffered an injury during the warm-up before a 1-0 win over Coventry City. Now fully recovered, O’Reilly offers a fresh dynamic for a squad looking to restore its rhythm.

Deploying O’Reilly at left-back would not sacrifice attacking output. Both O’Reilly and Gvardiol excel in possession and pose distinct goal threats. Alternatively, Maresca could shift Gvardiol into a central defensive role while inserting O’Reilly on the left. Either adjustment provides a viable path to give Gvardiol a much-needed break while helping O’Reilly rediscover the form that defined his previous season.
