North Mississippi Medical Center Expands ICU Capacity

North Mississippi Medical Center is expanding intensive care services for both adults and children through a $3.64 million project at its Tupelo hospital.

The facility is adding four new adult intensive care unit rooms and two pediatric intensive care unit rooms. Officials announced that the undertaking will also consolidate pediatric inpatient services onto a single floor.

Construction crews began the renovations earlier this month. Hospital leadership expects the project to reach completion by mid-January.

Relocating and Expanding the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

The renovation plan centers on the hospital’s first-floor pediatric unit. North Mississippi Medical Center is relocating the pediatric intensive care unit, known as the PICU, from its current second-floor location down to the first floor.

This physical shift expands the PICU capacity from four rooms to six. More importantly, it places the critical care space directly alongside the hospital’s other pediatric inpatient rooms.

The first-floor overhaul also incorporates family-focused amenities. Designers included a dedicated play area and toy room for young patients, alongside a separate waiting area designed specifically for PICU visitors.

Both the main pediatric unit and the newly expanded PICU will feature controlled access points. Hospital officials noted these security measures are intended to safeguard recovering children and the staff members caring for them.

Converting Former Pediatric Space into Adult Care Rooms

Vacating the second-floor space previously occupied by the PICU opens the door for adult care expansion. The hospital will convert that footprint into four brand-new adult ICU rooms.

“This project expands access to intensive care for both adults and children,” said NMMC President T.J. Adams.

The four additional adult ICU rooms are designed to address capacity constraints for adult patients requiring critical medical intervention. Work crews are currently on site in Tupelo, with the entire $3.64 million infrastructure upgrade scheduled to wrap up in mid-January.
