Top-Seeded Northwestern Faces Indiana in Big Ten Semifinal
The top-seeded Northwestern field hockey team opens its Big Ten Tournament run against No. 5 seed Indiana on Friday at 12 p.m. at Buckeye Varsity Field in Columbus, Ohio. The defending champion Wildcats earned a bye straight into the semifinals, looking to regain their footing after dropping a regular-season-ending 2-0 match to Penn State on Oct. 30.
That late-season stumble cost Northwestern the top spot in the national rankings, dropping the ‘Cats to No. 2 behind Maryland in the NFHCA Week 10 poll. Even so, Northwestern enters the tournament boasting a 16-2 overall record and a 7-1 mark in conference play, having secured a share of the 2026 Big Ten regular season title.
Awards and Roster Strengths Heading Into Columbus
The conference rewarded that regular-season dominance when the Big Ten announced its 2026 Postseason Honors. Northwestern picked up four of the six individual awards. Senior forward Ashley Sessa claimed both Big Ten Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year, securing the latter honor for a third consecutive season. Senior back Ilse Tromp earned Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight year, while Northwestern’s coaches (Tracey Fuchs, Georgia Holland and Will Byrne) captured Coaching Staff of the Year honors for the fourth consecutive season.

Sessa leads the Wildcat offense with 12 goals and 10 assists on the season, anchored by senior forward Olivia Bent-Cole and junior midfielder Laura Salamanca on the All-Big Ten First Team. Meanwhile, Indiana arrives in Columbus riding the momentum of a hard-fought quarterfinal upset. The Hoosiers advanced past No. 4 seed Rutgers 2-1 on Wednesday behind goals from Agustina Gamonal and Inés Garcia Prado, reaching the tournament semifinals for the first time since 2012.
Series History and What Awaits on Sunday
History favors the top-seeded Wildcats in Friday’s matchup. Northwestern has won 10 straight meetings against Indiana, holding a 23-10 all-time series advantage, including a 4-1 victory over the Hoosiers back on Oct. 16 in Bloomington. Indiana finished the regular season with a 9-7 record and a 4-4 conference mark, relying on balanced scoring with ten players finding the back of the cage throughout the fall.
Friday’s winner advances to Sunday’s championship game to face the victor of the Maryland-Iowa semifinal. The match begins at noon CT at Buckeye Varsity Hockey Field.
