Phoenix Florist Loses Over 6,000 in Stripe Cyber Breach

Phoenix Florist Gary Guerin Loses $126,000 in Stripe Account Cyber Breach

When a small business completes over 114 valley-wide floral events in 30 days, the reward is supposed to be financial breathing room. Instead, Phoenix business owner Gary Guerin discovered that an unknown actor had systematically drained more than $126,000 from his online business account, leaving his shop staring down an immediate operational crisis.

The cyber breach targeted the Stripe account utilized by Stem Swag to process customer invoices. Guerin, who serves as the owner and creative director of the floral shop, noticed the massive deficit this week. Guerin takes pride in the nine years his shop has served the Valley.

Unauthorized withdrawals began in October. Within the span of just a few days, the breach siphoned more than 126,000 dollars from the company account. For a small enterprise, the loss struck like a gut punch.

“There’s like a feeling in your stomach when you see that, and you think that it’s not real,” Guerin said.

The Human and Operational Toll on Stem Swag

Guerin pointed out the reality behind the digital transaction logs.

“We’re not just a number on a screen. This is people’s rent. It’s their livelihood,” Guerin said.

The sudden loss of revenue forced the shop into immediate defensive measures. To ensure that staff received their compensation and monthly bills were met, Guerin was forced to take out a loan. The gap between earned revenue and stolen funds created a cash flow emergency right as the company celebrated the end of its busiest month ever.

Stripe Support Fails to Resolve Missing Funds

In the wake of the discovery, Guerin initiated contact with Stripe, the payment processing platform handling the shop’s invoices, to investigate the intrusion and attempt a recovery of the missing capital. Yet, those digital channels have yielded little traction.

Communication with the platform has been difficult. Guerin noted that while he continuously gets messages from multiple people at Stripe that the issue has been escalated, nothing ever happens, leaving the business running out of time and running out of money.

Attempts to reach Stripe regarding this issue received no immediate response.

Guerin Involves Law Enforcement to Recover Funds

Refusing to absorb the loss quietly, Guerin has escalated the incident beyond the platform’s support queue. He has reached out to everyone from local law enforcement to the FBI in an effort to recover the funds.

“We will move forward. Small businesses are important and I will not be ignored. I will do everything within my power to protect my team and to protect other Arizona small businesses as well,” Guerin said.

Beyond his own recovery efforts, the florist hopes the incident serves as a cautionary tale for other small businesses when it comes to online transactions.
