San Jose State aims for bowl eligibility against NIU

San Jose State finds its season balanced on a razor’s edge as the Spartans prepare to host Northern Illinois on Saturday, needing a late-season surge to salvage a campaign that has slipped from preseason expectations.

Entering Week 10 with a 4-5 overall record and a 2-3 mark in the Mountain West, the Spartans are running out of runway. SJSU must win two of its final four games to secure bowl eligibility for the first time in three years. That task looks daunting given that the team has dropped two straight and four of its last six, while facing a tough stretch where they figure to be underdogs in their final three outings.

The Cost of Offensive Stagnation

The root of the frustration in San Jose stems from an offense that has ground to a near-halt. Aside from a September 12 win over Cal Poly, the Spartans have failed to crack the 20-point threshold in every game since. Nationally, the unit ranks 123rd in scoring, averaging just 19.9 points per game.

Injuries have only compounded the misery. Head coach Ken Niumatalolo’s squad is working through a fourth week of quarterback uncertainty between Luke Weaver—who has started seven games and gone 3-4—and freshman Daniel Rolovich, who made one start against UTEP before being sidelined by an injury. Up front, the offensive line took hits with starting center Joseph Harbert ruled out for the season due to an injury, while right guard Tyler Chen’s availability remains in question after he was hurt last week.

“For almost two years, this offense has been pretty prolific. I know what it looks like when it works, and so does Craig,” Niumatalolo said, referencing offensive coordinator Craig Stutzmann. “But we’re not there, and we got to look at everything and anything … hopefully the adjustments we continue to do will be better this week.”

The visiting Huskies arrive with an 0-8 record and an 0-4 conference mark, presenting what might be the final realistic window for SJSU to fix its offensive rhythm. NIU ranks second-to-last in the Mountain West in passing yards allowed at 215 per game and last in rushing yards allowed at 218.

Mounting Offensive Struggles Threaten Staff Job Security

The mounting offensive struggles have triggered palpable anxiety across the fan base and the athletic department alike. High hopes surrounded the Spartans heading into the year, following their failure to reach a bowl game last season after making a school-record three consecutive trips from 2022-24. When last year’s team fell short, the university fired four coaches, including longtime defensive coordinator Derrick Odum.

Another year without a postseason appearance could likely trigger more personnel moves. Athletic director Jeff Konya laid out the administrative reality during an October 14 appearance on The HQ Sportscast.

“I think those decisions are made when you, as a program or as an athletic department, have no practical way at that point to meet what your baseline objective was for the season,” Konya said. “Our baseline objective in each and every football season is to make a bowl game; that’s the minimum.”

Konya has expressed belief in the current coaching staff, but the goal is to meet expectations. Reaching that minimum requires six wins, while seven secures it.

Jeff Garcia’s Public Call to Action

The friction between historical pedigree and current reality spilled into the public sphere this week when San Jose State Hall of Fame quarterback Jeff Garcia weighed in on the program’s direction. Garcia, a Gilroy native who left SJSU after the 1993 season as the career leader in offensive yards before starring in the NFL, took to Instagram on November 2 to voice the mounting frustration of fans.

“The ultimate goal is to win the league against teams who are your equal,” Garcia wrote. “There’s no reason why we can’t get there, and I’m here to help the Spartans redefine their mentality.” He concluded his post by asking, “WHO’s WITH ME?”

Garcia alluded to SJSU’s struggles in the last 30 years, noting the program has seven winning seasons, two top-25 appearances, and seven bowl appearances with only three wins. Not once has the program found a spot in the AP Top 25 poll since concluding the 2020 campaign at No. 24.

“We sit here as former Spartans constantly waiting for that certain someone to bring us that competitive mindset to achieve greatness on and off the field,” Garcia posted. “We bring outsiders in, but never look at those who wore and bled for the blue and gold as our potential leader.”

Saturday afternoon inside CEFCU Stadium will test whether a winless Northern Illinois team can provide the exact remedy the Spartans need, or if the crossroads will lead straight toward another offseason of upheaval.
