Sen. Terry Williams Pleads Not Guilty to Domestic Assault Charge

Republican state Senator Terry Williams of Rutland pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to a charge of domestic assault following an incident involving his adult daughter. Williams, 74, faces up to 18 months in prison if convicted of the charge, according to reports from WCAX.

The case centers on an argument that took place Monday night at Williams’ home in Poultney. Court documents reveal a starkly different set of accounts regarding the physical altercation. The victim, who has lived with the Senator since July, told police that Williams hit her in the face with an open fist, leaving her face scratched. She further alleged that Williams told her, I should have punched you 40 years ago, before the strike occurred.

Williams provided a different version of events to investigators. He told police that his daughter had approached him and that he pushed her, an action that resulted in an injury to his own finger during the fight.

Toni Dutil Defends Senator Williams as Court Restricts Contact

Defense attorney Toni Dutil has signaled a vigorous defense of the Senator, asserting that he is not guilty of the alleged offense. Dutil framed the incident as a symptom of complicated family dynamics, noting that Williams’ public position does not shield him from the personal struggles many families face.

The court has released Williams on specific conditions. He is currently prohibited from contacting his adult daughter, whether in person or through online channels.
