Six Area Programs Advance to Iowa State Volleyball Tournament

The Road to Xtream Arena: Breaking Down the State Volleyball Tournament

The state volleyball tournament is back at Xtream Arena in Coralville, and the numbers tell an intense story of regular-season dominance and high-stakes postseason survival. Across the six regional programs advancing from The Gazette’s coverage area, combined records approach heights that guarantee fierce battles under the arena lights. In Class 5A, Iowa City West enters the bracket with a 28-6 mark under second-year coach Jaedynn Evans, ready for a Monday afternoon quarterfinal clash against No. 4 West Des Moines Dowling.

Tournament history carries real weight in these brackets. Iowa City West is making its 15th state tournament appearance and its second consecutive run, leaning on a program legacy that includes back-to-back Class 4A titles in 2010 and 2011. On the floor, senior Sophia Austen anchors the offense with 3.65 kills per set, while Lila Eastvold orchestrates the attack with 10.10 assists per set. Defensively, Izzie McDonald controls the back row with 4.19 digs per set to counter a Dowling squad sitting at 29-6.

Class 4A and 3A Heavyweights Prepare for Opening Serves

Clear Creek Amana enters the Class 4A bracket with a commanding 33-6 record under 12th-year coach Jackie Clubb. This marks the program’s eighth overall state appearance and its fifth consecutive trip, built on a foundation that reached the 4A runner-up spot in 2022. Julia Schlarbaum leads the Clipper offense with 4.54 kills per set, while Payton Curtin dishes out 10.02 assists per set ahead of a Monday evening matchup against No. 6 Sioux Center.

Western Dubuque joins the 4A field with a 32-6 record, returning to the state tournament for the first time since 2022. The Bobcats lean on Kyla Ramler’s 3.93 kills per set and Gabbie Demmer’s stellar 5.44 digs per set as they prepare to face North Polk. Meanwhile, in Class 3A, Solon brings a stellar 38-7 record into the tournament under veteran coach Ruben Galvan. Making its fifth state appearance and its first since winning the 3A title in 2014, Solon squares off against a formidable 38-4 Humboldt team on Tuesday afternoon.

Closer Looks at Class 2A Contenders

The depth of eastern Iowa volleyball shines brightest in Class 2A, where Dyersville Beckman and Union Community bring towering match records to Coralville. Beckman enters at 38-4 under head coach Todd Troutman, who brings 30 years of experience and 805 career wins into the Blazers’ 12th state tournament appearance. Joy Burkle paces the attack with 4.05 kills per set, supported by Addie Koelker’s 9.60 assists per set and Addi Hogan’s 4.85 digs per set. They open against No. 7 Denver on Tuesday afternoon.

Union Community boasts a 44-7 mark into its 11th state appearance and its first since 2023. Head coach Brian Jesse guides a squad featuring Bianca Grimm, who contributes 3.20 kills per set and a team-high 0.39 aces per set, alongside Hinley Mast’s 9.20 assists per set. The Knights face a monumental opening test against No. 5 Oakland Riverside, which enters the bracket at 39-0.
