Sixers Youth Foundation Renovates First Delaware Basketball Court

“It turned out well because it was ugly before it really turned out well,” said Pastor Ronald Hayes, a resident living near the park at 30th and Madison streets in Wilmington.

The Sixers Youth Foundation has renovated a neighborhood basketball court in Wilmington, Delaware, marking the first time the foundation has completed such a project in the state. The renovation is the 15th court the foundation has revamped, occurring in the city where the Delaware Blue Coats, the G League affiliate of the Philadelphia 76ers, are based.

Mayor Carney Celebrates Renovated Basketball Court

The foundation hosted a community party to celebrate the newly renovated space, which featured basketball clinics, a DJ, and a drum line. During the event, Wilmington Mayor John Carney noted that he played basketball at the park during his childhood, though he stated the court had never looked as good as it does following the makeover.

Mayor Carney described the involvement of the Sixers as “really really special,” specifically mentioning the context of the current year with the Sixers and LeBron.

Sixers Youth Foundation Prioritizes Regional Grant Funding

Local parents and community leaders expressed hope that the renovated court will serve as a welcoming and safe environment for neighborhood children. Leslie Walker of the Sixers Youth Foundation stated that being present in the community and providing grant dollars to regional areas that need them for children is a priority for the organization.

Regarding the foundation’s commitment to regional investment, Walker said, “our impact to us is really important and us being out in the community is very important and for us to be able to give those grant dollars into areas in the region that need it and can utilize it for children? We are gonna do it every day.”
