St. Mary’s Postpones Barnes & Noble Bookstore Kickoff Meetings Amid Ongoing Contract Talks

The Barnes & Noble campus kickoff meetings scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 28, have been postponed and will be rescheduled. College leadership and representatives from Barnes & Noble are continuing discussions to finalize the agreement for the bookstore transition before moving forward with campus kickoff activities and implementation planning.

For students, faculty, and staff at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, the delay introduces a pause into a bookstore transition process that has drawn community feedback and questions. The college announced that all sessions originally slated for Oct. 28 are canceled, and new meeting dates will be shared once plans are confirmed.

Marcy McKinney, executive director of auxiliary services, emphasized the necessity of completing the foundational agreement first. College officials stated that they recognize members of the campus community have questions about the transition and remain committed to providing opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to learn more, ask questions, and share feedback as the process moves forward.

Financial Realities Behind the Board Recommendation

The roots of this transition stretch back to June 26, 2026, when College Rhonda Phillips addressed the campus community regarding the Board of Trustees’ recommendation to transition bookstore operations to Barnes & Noble College Booksellers. In that June message, the administration acknowledged that the decision followed a comprehensive review process involving a formal Request for Proposal, a cross-functional review team, and multiple Board committees.

One thing has become abundantly clear: people care deeply about the Campus Bookstore and the Daily Grind. I understand why this decision has prompted concern, particularly for those who have strong connections to the Campus Bookstore and Daily Grind and recognize that these spaces create opportunities for students to gather and connect.

The primary driver behind the shift is fiscal sustainability. Like many campus bookstores across the country, the St. Mary’s facility has experienced significant operating losses for several years. Because the bookstore operates as an auxiliary enterprise, it is expected to be financially self-supporting. Sustained losses in this sector must be covered by other institutional resources originally intended to support the broader college mission and student experience.

Phased Implementation Leading to March 2027

Despite financial pressures, college leadership has emphasized that preserving the distinctive character of St. Mary’s remains a core priority. The administration has anchored the transition around three primary objectives: serving as responsible stewards of college resources, preserving the traditions and experiences that define the institution, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of bookstore services for future generations.

Spring break blog

The operational shift is designed to occur in phases. According to updates provided by Marcy McKinney on Sept. 10, 2026, the physical transition of bookstore and café operations will kick off during Spring Break in March 2027. Throughout the intervening fall semester, college leadership and the Barnes & Noble team planned to hold virtual and on-campus planning meetings with key stakeholders.

Updates, frequently asked questions, and future scheduling announcements continue to be posted on the official Campus Bookstore Transition webpage as the college works to finalize the agreement and chart the path toward March 2027.
