Student Lincoln Laureate Named: Anika Kinnear Honored for Leadership

Anika Kinnear, a Florida native, was inaugurated as a 2026 Student Lincoln Laureate on October 24 during a ceremony at the Old State Capitol Historic Site in Springfield, Illinois. The honor is among the highest accolades a college student can receive in the state, recognizing a small group of top students from four-year, degree-granting institutions for excellence in both their academic coursework and extracurricular commitments.

Kinnear joins more than 50 other students selected by their respective colleges to represent the state’s commitment to public service. For Kinnear, the honor aligns with a specific academic mission: a focus on environmental justice and African American studies. She intends to use her platform to help draft and institute policy changes aimed at bringing equity and justice to all.

The weight of the greater good

The Student Lincoln Laureate program stretches back more than a half-century, creating a lineage of public servants. Todd Shapiro, Chancellor of The Lincoln Academy of Illinois, noted that the current inductees reflect the same dedication to service as those selected 52 years ago.

In her application for the 2026 Student Laureate honor, she wrote:

“In a world of ever-growing divide, hostility, and turmoil, acting in the best interest for the greater good isn’t always an easy choice. It sometimes means making the hard, unpopular decisions in order to stand for those who need it most.”

From the hardwood to the capitol

While her academic focus is on policy and justice, Kinnear’s leadership has been equally visible in athletics. Data reveals a trajectory of steady growth and versatility on the basketball team. Since her first varsity letter in the 2023-24 season, she has evolved into a primary contributor and a recognized leader.

Her 2025-26 season was particularly dominant. Kinnear led her team in total points (191), field goals (65), rebounds (142), and minutes per game (27.3). She also earned the title of the team’s Most Improved Player and was named the Boomers’ Inspirational Leader of the Year. Her ability to perform under pressure is documented in the stats: she recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds against Grinnell College on February 14, 2026.

The overlap between her athletic achievements—including being a three-time Academic All-MWC recipient and a Chi Alpha Sigma inductee—and her civic recognition suggests a pattern of high-capacity leadership.

The tangible rewards of civic excellence

The inauguration ceremony provided more than just symbolic recognition. Each Student Laureate received a set of honors designed to mark their entry into a lifelong community of service:

  • The Abraham Lincoln Civic Engagement Award
  • A Lincoln medallion
  • A challenge coin
  • A $1,000 check from The Lincoln Academy of Illinois

For many, the financial award is a modest gesture, but the “challenge coin” and medallion serve as permanent markers of membership in a selective group of Illinois’ most promising young leaders.

The Lincoln Academy of Illinois reflects a dedication to public service, recognizing students like Kinnear who are accomplished in both curricular and extracurricular activities.

As Kinnear moves toward graduation, the question remains: how will she translate the theoretical frameworks of environmental justice and the competitive drive of varsity athletics into actual policy shifts in a politically divided Illinois?
