A Community Seeks Solace After Perry Street Violence

Faith leaders and local officials gathered at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in Tallahassee this Thursday, holding a prayer vigil to address the trauma following a week of gun violence. The event, organized by Leon County District 1 Commissioner Bill Proctor, served as a communal space for residents to process grief and seek a path forward after a series of shootings left the city shaken.

The urgency of the moment stems from a violent Saturday on Perry Street. According to reports from WTXL, that incident resulted in 11 people being shot, including a grandmother injured while fleeing the scene. The violence did not end there; at least four other shootings have occurred in the community since that initial mass casualty event.

The Current Condition of Victims

As of Thursday, the recovery process remains ongoing for those caught in the crossfire. Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell provided an update at the vigil, noting that while five of the 11 victims from the Perry Street shooting have been released from the hospital, six remain under medical care. Among those still hospitalized, three individuals are in critical condition, including an 11-year-old child.

Pastor Stanley Walker, who opened his church to the community for the vigil, shared a poignant moment from his visit to a hospital bedside. He described speaking with 17-year-old victim Kaybreeyanna King, who was shot in the head during the Saturday incident. “All of us gather around the bedside and pray for KK, and in leaving, I said, do you hear me?…and she gave me the thumbs up that she heard me,” Walker told the assembly.

The Investigation into the Perry Street Shooting

The Tallahassee Police Department has moved quickly to identify those responsible for the Perry Street incident. Chief Revell confirmed that a 15-year-old has been taken into custody. The origins of the violence appear rooted in a sequence of escalating confrontations. According to Chief Revell, the shooting followed two separate fights involving “several youth.” Within two minutes of the second fight, a firearm was handed between individuals, and shots were fired. The Chief noted that a camera located directly above the scene was not functional at the time of the incident.

Law Enforcement Increases Presence for Football and Halloween Events

With the city preparing for a weekend featuring major football games at both Florida A&M University and Florida State University, alongside Halloween festivities, law enforcement is bracing for a high-traffic period. Chief Revell has assured the public that the community remains safe, though the department plans to increase its presence and improve lighting in the Perry Street area.

The broader impact of this cycle of violence is felt deeply by those who have lived through it before. Sherri Davis McGill and Graldine Herris, two community members who attended the vigil, spoke to the lingering grief that defines their experience. Davis McGill, who lost her son to gun violence in 2017, noted that the recent events “hit home” for her.

“Our faith in huma kind, our trust in our community, and our hope for our children in their future remains resolute and steadfast. That’s what we carry forward,” Commissioner Bill Proctor said during the vigil.

The Tallahassee Police Department continues to follow leads in the case and has urged the public to assist in the investigation. Residents with information are encouraged to contact Crime Solvers at 850-574-8477. As the investigation proceeds, the focus for many remains on the recovery of the victims and the search for long-term solutions to the gun crime affecting the city’s youth.
