Two foundational figures in Tallahassee’s faith community received a lasting civic tribute Thursday when a stretch of West Virginia Street was officially renamed in their honor, wctv.tv reported.
Rev. Dr. RB Holmes and his wife, Dr. Gloria Holmes, have spent four decades leading Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, located at the intersection of Tennessee Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. RB & Gloria P. Holmes Street now spans W. Virginia Street between Copeland and Adams streets, marking 40 years of local service that reaches far beyond the pulpit into foster care advocacy and helping the Frenchtown neighborhood.
Four Decades of Community Building in Tallahassee
For forty years, the couple has anchored spiritual and social initiatives across the Capital City. That sustained local footprint drew formal recognition, cementing a legacy built on local institution-building.
“As a pastor and wife for 40 years, we hope we are contributing to the future of this community by building hope, by building ministries, by building and strengthening families and encouraging young people,” Rev. Dr. Holmes stated, according to wctv.tv.
Dr. Gloria P. Holmes expressed surprise and gratitude that her decades of dedicated service were recognized alongside her husband’s.
“Giving back to the community is just critically important,” Dr. Gloria Holmes said, as reported by wctv.tv. “Blessing people, blessing their lives, that is what the lord has called us to do and that is what we are determined to continue doing.”
Looking Ahead to Unresolved Local Challenges
Even as the street renaming ceremony celebrated past achievements, both leaders emphasized that their community work remains ongoing.
The couple outlined several persistent local issues they intend to keep addressing, specifically targeting housing, mental health, and violence in Tallahassee.
