Columbia Sportswear Launches Survival Bunker Contest Poking Fun at Tech Billionaires
Columbia Sportswear is poking fun at the private escape plans of wealthy tech figures with a new contest that offers everyday outdoor enthusiasts the chance to win a fully stocked, off-grid survival bunker. The campaign, titled the “Don’t Panic Room,” challenges participants to demonstrate their survival skills, ingenuity, and resilience.
As billionaire tech executives construct underground hideaways and remote New Zealand compounds for worst-case scenarios, the Portland, Oregon-based apparel brand aims to give the rest of society a shot at weathering whatever Mother Nature delivers. The campaign kicked off with a promotional film featuring Columbia CEO Tim Boyle, who invites viewers to enter for a chance to win the customized shelter. The spot is directed by Benji Weinstein and produced by SMUGGLER, and created with adam&eveTBWA.
Inside the 40-Foot Converted Shipping Container
The grand prize consists of a modified 40-foot by 8-foot off-grid shipping container delivered directly to the winner’s door. Inside, the living space is outfitted with a bunk bed, a small kitchen and dining area, a bathroom, and shelves stocked with survival gear, tools, and supplies.
For companionship, the bunker includes a robotic dog named Rocky. To prepare occupants for conditions outside the shelter, a designated Columbia section features rows of gear packaged inside emergency cans, including puffer jackets that can be opened when things get chilly. When you envision a classic bunker, it’s lined with rows and rows of cans to be opened in an emergency,
said Chris Araujo, senior director of Columbia Brand Creative.

The sealed containers house items such as the Terwilliger Trail Heat Seal Hooded Jacket, which utilizes Columbia’s Omni-Heat Infinity reflective thermal technology inspired by emergency blankets. The bunker is also stocked with footwear, including the Tellurix Titanium OutDry Mid waterproof shoe designed for unpredictable conditions.
Columbia Survival Skill Entries Close November 24
Participants can submit video entries showcasing their outdoor survival skills through Instagram or by visiting the official Columbia bunker campaign page. The contest entry period starts at 12:00 p.m. ET on October 28, 2026, and the entry window closes on November 24, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. ET. There is no purchase necessary.
We’ve been making gear for bad weather and other unfortunate moments for almost 90 years,
Tim Boyle said in a statement released by the company. We’ve seen it all and we figured we’d offer our fans a chance to overcome the absolute worst that can happen in the outdoors. Hopefully the winner never needs the ‘Don’t Panic Room,’ but we made sure they’ll be warm and dry if the world does go to sh*t.
Matt Sutton, head of marketing at Columbia, added that the initiative serves as a continuation of the brand’s “Engineered for Whatever” platform. As tech executives build shelters to guard against their own tech, the company intends the contest to reward everyday outdoors people.
