Michael Goessling, an adopted St. Louis executive, discovered at age 58 that his biological father is five-time Grammy winner and Doobie Brothers singer Michael McDonald. The discovery unfolded after an unknown half-brother used a 23andMe DNA test, leading to a surprise phone call where Goessling recognized the legendary voice.
How a 23andMe DNA Test Cracked a Family Mystery
Michael Goessling always knew he was adopted and was raised with an idyllic childhood by his adoptive parents, Paul and Kay Goessling, in St. Louis, Missouri. Even with a happy upbringing, he spent decades wondering about his biological origins. A 59-year-old executive at a St. Louis distribution company, Goessling had registered with the genetic testing company 23andMe roughly 15 years ago to check for any hereditary medical conditions as he prepared to become a father himself. After the tests came back completely normal, he considered deleting his file, but trusted a gut feeling to leave his account active. That instinct paid off when Dylan McDonald, the singer’s son with wife Amy Holland, used the platform to trace him. Goessling learned that Dylan and his sister Scarlett already knew about a half-sibling and that their father never abandoned the hope of meeting the son he had placed for adoption as a teenager. Within 36 hours of the DNA match notification, the family ties began to unravel.
The breakthrough came after a genetic testing kit was taken by an unknown half-brother. Within 36 hours of the test, the system notified the family of a match, connecting Goessling to relatives he never knew existed.

His biological mother put him in touch with his biological father, who was identified initially only as a mysterious musician named “Mike.” Before father and son connected, McDonald left Goessling a voicemail, and the biological father deliberately stepped back to let the mother-son reunion happen first.
Recognizing the Voice of Doobie Brothers Singer Michael McDonald
During their first phone conversation, the man on the other end mentioned he was touring and would be stopping in St. Louis on Sept. 4 at an amphitheater he believed was called Hollywood. Goessling checked the Hollywood Casino Amphitheater schedule and realized The Doobie Brothers were performing there that exact night.
Goessling had been a fan of the band since childhood, having grown up singing along to tracks like China Grove
and Black Water
. As they talked, the familiar, unmistakable vocals clicked in his mind.

The singer chuckled and answered simply, Yep, afraid so.
Goessling later admitted he initially thought he was being pranked on television, recalling that the surreal reality took more than a year to fully sink in. Their initial phone conversation lasted about 90 minutes. Though Goessling plays a bit of guitar and sings, he joked that he did not inherit the legendary voice, noting that God only made one of those.

How Teenage Parents Shared Decades of Guilt
McDonald and Goessling’s biological mother were both 14 years old when he was conceived in the 1960s.
McDonald went on to join The Doobie Brothers in 1975 as a temporary replacement before becoming their lead vocalist and keyboardist, later serving as a backing vocalist for Steely Dan and building a five-time Grammy-winning career. His rich career also includes a 2024 memoir titled What a Fool Believes, an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with The Doobie Brothers in 2020, and an induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2025 alongside bandmates Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons. Meanwhile, he and Goessling’s birth mother remained close friends over the decades.
“We always talked about him. And it always came down to our greatest fear was, how did life treat him? I always carried that guilt with me. But just to know that he was okay and that he had a good life, and a life certainly that I wouldn’t have been able to afford him at that time, was a great reward.”

Meeting in Person and Becoming a Grandfather
When the father and son finally met face-to-face, McDonald opened his arms for a bear hug and told Goessling he loved him. The reunion brought an unexpected milestone for the rock icon: discovering he was a grandfather.

. McDonald noted that his new family role was still sinking in.

Both men have expressed deep gratitude toward Paul and Kay Goessling for providing a secure and loving home. McDonald praised them as the true heroes of the story.
