Elsinore Dominates British Independent Film Awards Nominations as BBC Film Secures Twenty Nods
Simon Stone’s feature Elsinore has dominated the nominations for the British Independent Film Awards, securing 12 shortlist inclusions to lead this year’s contenders. Last month, the movie had its worldwide premiere as the Opening Night Gala at the BFI London Film Festival, portraying actor Ian Charleson during his final months alive while battling severe AIDS and preparing to star as Hamlet at the National Theatre. The twelve nominations cover best screenplay, best director for Stone, British independent film, supporting actor for Billie Piper, and lead performance for Andrew Scott, alongside technical fields like editing, casting, cinematography, costume design, original music, production design, and make-up and hair design.
Following closely behind is Clio Barnard’s I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning, which collected eight nominations. Backed by BBC Film along with three alternative features, the movie builds on its triumph at the Cannes Film Festival where it secured the Un Certain Regard People’s Choice Award. Its shortlist entries include Best British Independent Film, Best Director for Barnard, Best Screenplay for Enda Walsh, and Best Ensemble Performance for Anthony Boyle, Joe Cole, Jay Lycurgo, Daryl McCormack, and Lola Petticrew, ahead of its UK and Ireland release on December 4. Overall, BBC Film-backed projects received a total of 20 nominations.
Debut Features and Veteran Auteurs Make Their Mark
The nominations also highlight a strong showing for debut filmmakers. Ashley Walters’ feature directorial debut Animol earned seven nominations. The film, starring Tut Nyuot, Vladyslav Baliuk, Stephen Graham, and Sharon Duncan-Brewster, follows two teenagers inside a young offender institution. Billy Lumby’s Florid secured five nominations, including Best Debut Director and recognition for Jonathan Jules in his first leading feature film role. Oscar Hudson’s Straight Circle picked up five craft nominations covering cinematography, costume design, editing, make-up and hair design, and production design, while Black Church Bay earned two nods for writer-director Rhys Marc Jones and breakthrough producer Alex Polunin.

Juliette Binoche for Queen At Sea, Leisa Gwenllian for Effi o Blaenau, Erin Doherty for Faith, and Tut Nyuot for Animol are among the other actors featured in the lead performance category.
