Foo Fighters Bring Out 1997 Gerry Rafferty Cover for Jimmy Kimmel Residency
Foo Fighters have released their cover of Gerry Rafferty’s 1978 classic “Baker Street,” according to loudersound.com. Dave Grohl and his bandmates originally laid down the track for BBC Radio One’s Evening Session in April 1997, capturing a gritty rock reading of the smooth saxophone-driven staple.
The recording first saw daylight in November 1997 on a limited-edition EP packaged with The Colour And The Shape, alongside interpretations of tracks by Prince, Killing Joke, and Gary Numan. It later surfaced on select versions of the “My Hero” single and the Record Store Day exclusive covers compilation Medium Rare in 2010. While the cover also made an appearance on 10th-anniversary editions of The Colour And The Shape in 2007, licensing and distribution hurdles kept the track largely absent from major streaming services like Spotify for years.
Grohl Performs Resurrected Track Before Stadium Tour
The resurrected track returned to the live rotation as the band performed it during a four-night residency on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Earlier in the month, Grohl also played “Baker Street” at an event honoring the late Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Hillel Slovak at the Silverlake Conservatory in Los Angeles. During that performance, Grohl dedicated the song to anyone who spent the 1970s listening to AM radio from the backseat of a Ford Maverick.
The release precedes a packed international touring schedule. Foo Fighters kick off their stadium tour of Australia next week, heading to New Zealand in January for two dates, followed by upcoming performances in India and South America.
