Patrick Stewart Dies: Ian McKellen and Co-Stars Pay Tribute

Sir Patrick Stewart Dies at 86 After Battle With Alzheimer’s and Lewy Body Dementia

Stewart passed away at his home in Los Angeles in the loving care of his wife, Sunny, following a brief journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia, according to a statement shared on social media by his longtime spokesperson, Kelly Bush Novak.

Ian McKellen led the tributes, calling Stewart “the most respected and beloved actor of his generation.” McKellen noted that Stewart “was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire,” adding that the actor wore his heart on his sleeve.

Before his global recognition on television and film, Stewart built a reputation as a pillar of the British stage, appearing with the Royal Shakespeare Company from the mid-1960s onward and winning a Laurence Olivier Award in 1979 for his performance in Antony and Cleopatra.

In 1987, Stewart was cast as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, playing the starship captain for seven seasons through 1994 and reprising the role in subsequent feature films and the series Star Trek: Picard. In 2000, he took on the role of Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men film franchise, portraying the telepathic mutant mentor across multiple sequels and prequels over more than two decades.

Marvel Studios confirmed that Stewart’s final on-screen appearance will be in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, marking his ninth time playing Professor X on the big screen. The film is scheduled to open in theaters on December 18 from Disney and Marvel Studios.

A Definitive Force on Screen and Stage

Stewart’s extensive career spanned far beyond the bridge of the Enterprise and the halls of the X-Men academy. His cinematic footprint included notable turns such as King Arthur’s father-in-law Leodegrance in John Boorman’s 1981 film Excalibur, master swordsman Gurney Halleck in the 1984 adaptation of Dune, and a chilling, against-type performance as a Neo-Nazi skinhead ringleader in the 2015 action-thriller Green Room directed by Jeremy Saulnier. He also lent his voice as a regular highlight to the animated sitcom American Dad as Deputy Director Avery Bullock. On stage, alongside his extensive Shakespearean repertoire, he notably performed a one-man production of A Christmas Carol taking on roles including Scrooge and Tiny Tim. Reflecting on his longevity, Stewart stated in a July interview that he could never imagine officially retiring, noting that he would always and forever be an actor.

Director duo Joe and Anthony Russo released a statement noting that they had been lucky enough to work with a childhood hero, praising his unmatched integrity and unmistakable presence. Longtime co-star Hugh Jackman posted on Instagram that he had lost a tremendous friend and learned so much from him.

Stewart is survived by his wife, Sunny, and his two children.
