Alexander Zverev Clinches World No. 1 Ranking After Reaching Vienna Quarterfinals
Germany’s Alexander Zverev is set to become the new world No. 1 in men’s tennis, capping a year in which he won two Grand Slams. Zverev reached the milestone by advancing to the quarterfinals of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna.
The 29-year-old Hamburg-born player is the second German man to claim the top spot in the sport, following Boris Becker, who achieved the feat some 35 years ago. Zverev replaces Italy’s Jannik Sinner at the head of the rankings.
Zverev Breaks Through to Capture Major Titles
Zverev’s ascent makes him the second-oldest first-time No. 1 ranked player. Australian John Newcombe achieved the feat at age 30 in 1974.
For years, Zverev’s career was defined by coming close to major titles while contending with rivals like Sinner and Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz. That dynamic shifted in 2026 when Zverev broke through to capture both the French Open and US Open titles. He also earned a gold medal at the 2021 Olympics.
Known for his consistency, Zverev stands as just the ninth man to reach at least the semifinals at all four major tournaments in a single season.

Reactions to the Milestone
Among German female tennis players, only Steffi Graf and Angelique Kerber have previously reached the No. 1 position in the WTA rankings.
(It is) very special. To have the feeling to be on the top of the world is amazing, Zverev said. It is different than winning a tournament or a title, but it’s such a special feeling to know that the No. 1 is going to be next to your name when the new rankings come out.
