High Tide Alert Issued for Bali’s Coastlines Ahead of November New Moon
Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an official warning regarding unusually high tides threatening parts of Bali’s coastline. According to reporting from The Bali Times, the advisory spans from November 8 to November 11, raising concerns over potential coastal flooding and disruptions to activities near the shore.
The meteorological disturbance stems from a combination of marine forecasts and astronomical alignment. Specifically, the warning arrives just ahead of a new moon on Monday, November 9, a lunar phase that naturally amplifies sea levels during high tide due to the synchronized gravitational pull of the sun and the moon. Cahyo Nugroho, head of the regional meteorological agency, stated on Friday, November 6, that the precise timing and height of these peak tides will vary across different coastal sectors.
Six Districts Face Potential Coastal Flooding and Seawater Inundation
BMKG’s Region III office in Denpasar has pinpointed six distinct areas across the island where coastal communities could experience higher-than-usual water levels between Sunday and Wednesday. The zones under watch include southern Jembrana, southern Tabanan, the coastal areas of Badung, Denpasar’s coastline, the coastal areas of Gianyar, and southern Klungkung.
While the advisory covers major stretches of Bali’s southern coastline frequented by international visitors, officials clarified that not every beach within these districts will necessarily see flooding. Instead, the rising water—locally known as banjir rob—targets low-lying land where seawater can push inland during peak tidal intervals. The practical disruptions extend beyond residential streets. Authorities warned that the heightened tides could interfere with loading and unloading operations at local ports, disrupt salt farming, and impact inland fish farming infrastructure.
What Residents and Visitors Need to Know About the Four-Day Advisory
Despite the high tide alert, BMKG has maintained a measured approach regarding public safety restrictions. The agency has not announced beach closures or implemented a general ban on swimming or other shoreline activities tied to the forecast. The warning focuses strictly on rising sea levels rather than a blanket prediction of dangerous waves across the island.
Residents, tourists, and business owners operating near the shoreline are advised to monitor local conditions closely, especially within low-lying pockets vulnerable to temporary seawater flooding. Because the timing of the highest tides differs by location, conditions will shift throughout the four-day warning period.
For those tracking real-time updates and maritime advisories, official forecasts remain accessible through the BMKG website, the Info BMKG mobile application, and official social media channels at @infobmkg and @bmkgbali. The high tide advisory remains in active effect through November 11, 2026.
