Rybakina Secures Year-End World Number One Ranking in Tokyo

Elena Rybakina secured the year-end women’s singles number one ranking by defeating Yulia Putintseva 6-2, 6-3 in the last 16 of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, bbc.com reported. The 70-minute victory at the Pan Pacific Open guarantees that the 27-year-old cannot be overtaken in the closing weeks of the 2026 season, cementing a stellar campaign featuring Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open and the US Open.

Rybakina arrived in the Japanese capital fresh off a victory at the Ningbo Open in China, where she claimed her fourth title of 2026. Playing her opening match in Tokyo following a first-round bye, she served six aces and hit 25 winners against fellow Kazakh player Putintseva. It means a lot. This is something we worked for with the team, Rybakina said about capturing the year-end top spot, according to bbc.com. So many great players and we are all really close to each other, and I’m happy that now with last week and with today’s win I made it possible to secure number one at the end of the year.

Rybakina Reaches Singles Rankings Summit After US Open

RFI reported that Rybakina first ascended to the summit of the women’s singles rankings in September, overtaking Aryna Sabalenka after winning the US Open. Her quarter-final victory over Zheng Qinwen in New York paved the way for that milestone. In Tokyo, her serve proved decisive under the closed roof, where she saved the only break point she faced.

Today the serve definitely helped me in the important moments, Rybakina said, as noted by RFI. I was just trying to pick my spot and I think today with a closed roof and a combination of the balls and the court made me feel better serving. I’m glad today it worked.

According to WTA Tennis, the recent WTA 500 event in Ningbo and WTA 250 event in Osaka brought substantial movement across the tour. While Rybakina successfully defended her Ningbo title—marking her 15th career trophy—other players made notable leaps in the rankings. Katerina Siniakova jumped 37 places from No. 86 to No. 49 after ending a three-year singles title drought in Osaka. British player Katie Boulter climbed 10 spots to No. 48 following her third semifinal appearance of the season, and Leylah Fernandez moved up seven spots to No. 23 after reaching the Ningbo final.

Rybakina Faces Leylah Fernandez in Tokyo Quarter-Finals

With the year-end ranking locked down, Rybakina advances in Tokyo to face Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in the quarter-finals. The two last met in the Ningbo Open final, where Rybakina won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Beyond the Pan Pacific Open, Rybakina’s schedule points toward the defense of her singles title at the season-ending WTA Finals, which are slated to run from November 8–15.

WTA Tennis noted that even if Rybakina had exited early in Tokyo, she could have secured the year-end top position by winning a single match at the upcoming WTA Finals. Instead, her straight-sets win over Putintseva secured her the year-end top ranking, allowing her to head into the closing weeks of the season with her position already established.
