One crew member died and another remains missing after a French Air and Space Force Mirage 2000D attack jet crashed late Tuesday near Rougeville in eastern France. Authorities launched a major search operation and opened dual military and judicial investigations.
The two-seat ground-attack aircraft went down at approximately 10:40 p.m. on October 20, 2026, according to official statements from the Ministry of the Armed Forces. The jet was returning to its home installation after a training mission when its radar signal vanished. France acquired 86 airframes of this type, with the final delivery occurring in 2001.
Assigned to the 2/3 Champagne
fighter squadron out of Nancy-Ochey Air Base 133, the aircraft carried a pilot and a weapons system officer, known within the French forces by the acronym NOSA. Military officials confirmed that the crew comprised a young pilot undergoing training alongside an experienced weapons officer with extensive flight hours.
Rescuers Search the Meurthe-et-Moselle Sector
The crash site sits roughly halfway between the towns of Toul and Pont-à-Mousson in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department.
Local authorities deployed a field command post in Rougeville as hundreds of firefighters from the SDIS 54 department, gendarmes, and air base personnel cordoned off the perimeter. Search teams utilized a rescue helicopter. This aircraft was equipped with thermal imaging systems to comb a 15-kilometer zone around Pont-à-Mousson, while specialized units continued combing the Rougeville area to determine the fate of the second crew member.

He emphasized that the aircraft was reliable and had recently undergone maintenance without experiencing technical reliability issues.

French Air Force Operates Mirage 2000D Jets Through 2035
Built by Dassault Aviation, the two-seat Mirage 2000D entered service in 1993 to execute day-and-night precision ground attacks in complex environments. France acquired 86 airframes, utilizing them across major conflicts over the last three decades, including missions in Kosovo in 1999, Libya in 2011, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and the African Sahel region.
The first upgraded variant was delivered in April 2025, with the air force slated to keep the aircraft operational through at least 2035.
A subsequent non-fatal incident occurred in late July 2021 in the Nancy area where the crew successfully ejected to safety. In March 2025, a separate incident involved a mid-air collision. This event involved two Alpha Jet aircraft belonging to the Patrouille de France aerobatic team near the Saint-Dizier air base in Haute-Marne, though both crews successfully deployed their ejection seats. In August 2024, a separate mid-air collision between two Rafale fighters in Meurthe-et-Moselle near Colombey-les-Belles claimed two lives.
