According to Worldometer, Iran reported proven oil reserves of 208,600,000,000 barrels in 2025, accounting for 11.8% of the world’s total and ranking third internationally behind major competitors.
Crude Production and Reserves Breakdown
Output figures show significant scale across multiple petroleum categories. Worldometer reports that total production reached 4,768,756 barrels per day in 2025, marking a 3.1% increase from the 4,626,733 barrels per day recorded in 2024. That 2025 total breaks down into 4,051,425 barrels per day of crude oil alongside 710,000 barrels per day of natural gas plant liquids.
Based on 2025 production rates, Iran possesses roughly 141 years of proven oil reserves remaining, calculated by dividing crude and condensate reserves by annual production. Historical tracking from Worldometer indicates that reserves stood at 155,600,000,000 barrels in 2019 before rising in subsequent reporting years.
Domestic Oil Consumption and Refining Mix
A substantial share of domestic output feeds internal energy needs rather than leaving the country. While modern production figures highlight domestic scale, geopolitical flashpoints have long centered on how Iranian crude reaches international buyers. According to reporting from the Guardian, tensions involving Western sanctions and Iranian threats to close the Strait of Hormuz have underscored the critical nature of maritime oil transit routes. Approximately one-fifth of global oil supplies pass through the strait, which served as the route for 17 million barrels per day in 2011.
Historically, the Guardian noted that China stood as the top destination for Iranian crude exports between January and June 2011, accounting for 22% of shipments. Japan and India imported 14% and 13% respectively, while the European Union took 18% led by Italy and Spain. Nations like Sri Lanka and Turkey showed heavy reliance, with Iranian crude accounting for 100% and 51% of their total crude imports during that period.
Global Standing Among Major Producers
Global reserve rankings place Iran among an elite group of energy-wealthy states. As of January 1, 2011, Saudi Arabia held the world’s top proven oil reserves at 263bn barrels, followed by Venezuela and Canada, according to the Guardian. Iran held the fourth-largest reserves globally at 137bn barrels at that time, ranking ahead of Iraq, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates.
