Israel announced on June 25, 2026, that it has set no timetable for withdrawing military forces from Lebanon, Gaza, and Syria. The declaration came as Israeli and Lebanese officials engaged in US-brokered talks in Washington, while sporadic attacks and raids continued across the region.
As diplomatic delegations convened in Washington for US-brokered negotiations, Israeli leadership drew a hard line regarding its military presence across three fronts. Defense Minister Israel Katz said at a graduation ceremony at a military academy that troops would stay in security zones to protect domestic communities.
Katz added that officials oppose the withdrawal of IDF forces from the security zone in Lebanon despite existing and anticipated political pressures.
Washington Talks and the Stance on Hezbollah Disarmament
The diplomatic track in Washington, led under US pressure with direct talks between Lebanese and Israeli officials that began in April, approached a potential commitment of intent according to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Yet government spokesperson David Mencer made clear that any military redeployment hinges entirely on prior actions on the ground.
Mencer told journalists, noting that past disarmament agreements from 2024 were not fulfilled by the militia group, that they would not withdraw their forces from southern Lebanon as long as Hezbollah remained a threat, was not disarmed, and was not demilitarised.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reinforced this position at the military academy event, stating that troops would remain in southern Lebanon as long as necessary and confirming that he gave the IDF full freedom of action.
Sporadic Strikes and Truce Violations in Southern Lebanon
Despite a declared ceasefire intended to stabilize the border and protect ongoing diplomatic efforts, violence has persisted at a lower frequency. Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported that three people were killed and one person was wounded when an enemy drone targeted a vehicle on the road between Zawtar and Mayfadoun.
The incident marked the third fatal event in a single week, raising the weekly death toll to at least seven. Hezbollah condemned the strike as a flagrant violation of the ceasefire.
The Israeli military offered a different operational account for the engagements, stating that soldiers identified five Hezbollah terrorists who posed a threat to them in Zawtar al-Sharqiyah and subsequently eliminated them alongside an armed operative near the Ali al-Taher Ridge.
Military Raids and Casualties in the West Bank and Gaza
Simultaneously, military operations and settler violence continued in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. The Palestinian health ministry announced that 32-year-old Mustafa Taha Mustafa al-Khatib was shot and killed by Israeli occupation forces in Salfit after troops entered his home at dawn.
Relatives and local sources stated that the troops forced entry without warning, while the Israeli military reported that soldiers fired at an individual throwing objects at soldiers during a raid. The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society reported that troops left al-Khatib’s body inside the ransacked house after family members stated that ambulances were blocked from reaching him for nearly two hours.
In northern Gaza, another Palestinian was killed by troops in the al-Atatra area of Beit Lahiya, and a separate drone strike wounded two people near Gaza City. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, violations of the October 10 ceasefire have resulted in 1,031 deaths and 3,309 injuries in the territory.
