Prime Minister Narendra Modi Inaugurates Pune Metro Pink Line Built at Rs 8,300 Crore
Hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the 23-kilometre Pink Line connecting Maan and Shivajinagar, social media video clips showed rainwater leaking inside the newly built Maan Metro station, raising immediate questions over construction quality. The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) issued a late-night clarification on Sunday, stating that the leakage at the PMR-01 station was caused by a temporary blockage in a terrace drainage pipe rather than any structural defect.
The ₹8,313 crore corridor, popularly known as the “Puneri Metro” or Pink Line, represents a vital transport link for the region’s technology sector. Built under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model using the Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer framework, the project was executed by Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited, a joint venture between TRIL Urban Transport Private Limited and Siemens Project Ventures GmbH.
Commercial Operations and Fare Structure on the Pink Line
Commercial passenger services on the 23.203-kilometre fully elevated corridor open at 6:00 AM on 4 November, following the virtual inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Balewadi Stadium on 3 November. Trains will operate daily until 11:40 PM, running every six minutes during peak hours and every twelve minutes during off-peak periods. Ticket fares range from ₹12 to ₹62 based on distance traveled, with the service expected to reduce travel time between Hinjewadi and central Pune to 45 minutes for more than 200,000 daily commuters.

The remaining 10 stations open with both staircases operational. Six further stations—Laxmi Nagar, Balewadi Phata, Baner Gaon, Baner, Reserve Bank of India, and Shivajinagar—remain temporarily closed pending final completion and safety clearances, with openings anticipated by late November or early December 2026.
Prime Minister Modi Inaugurates Pune Metro Expansion Project
During the inauguration event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that India’s national metro network has expanded from 248 kilometres across five cities in 2014 to nearly 1,200 kilometres across 26 cities, making it the third-largest metro network globally. He also laid the foundation stone for the Pune Metro Phase-II expansion, valued at approximately ₹13,500 crore, which will add corridors connecting Kharadi, Wagholi, Hadapsar, Swargate, and Khadakwasla.

Prime Minister Modi stated that before 2014, metro expansion was very slow, noting that during the Congress regime, metro services operated in only five cities. He added that since 2014, under the BJP/NDA government, metros have started running in 26 cities. He also mentioned that the network now carries over one crore passengers daily.
The Pink Line incorporates specific operational and environmental parameters. The corridor operates with 22 train sets of three coaches each, accommodating roughly 1,000 passengers per train. Approximately 100 women train pilots operate the network, and women account for about 50 percent of total station staff. Roughly 30 percent of the corridor's total electricity requirements are sourced from solar power. To support accessibility, PMRDA cleared a ₹426 crore plan to develop 19.2 kilometres of last-mile connections featuring pedestrian walkways, cycle tracks, and improved bus bays across eight major IT park stations.
