The death toll from a Russian aerial bomb strike on a humanitarian aid center in Komyshuvakha, Zaporizhzhia region, has risen to 53 following days of recovery operations. Regional military administration head Mykhailo Semikin confirmed the updated figure, while the State Emergency Service previously noted 50 fatalities from the November 2, 2026, attack. Officials report this is the Russian attack with the highest death toll this year.

Subterranean School and Aid Point Hit in Zaporizhzhia

The targeted location was a school featuring a subterranean shelter situated seven metres underground, constructed after Russian forces destroyed the previous above-ground school building in July 2023, according to local reporting detailed by Suspilne. Designed with a capacity to accommodate up to a thousand students across two shifts, the facility operated in-person for roughly two months before shifting to remote learning.

At the time of the strike on Monday morning, residents had gathered at the site to collect bread and other humanitarian supplies. The location also functioned as an invincibility point where locals could warm up and charge mobile devices during electricity outages. According to regional officials, the Russian military executed a coordinated sequence of at least nine strikes, initially deploying FAB-500 bombs before utilizing heavy FAB-3000 weapons carrying approximately a ton and a half of explosives, munitions typically designed to breach concrete fortifications and bunkers.

Regional military administration head Mykhailo Semikin stated that search and rescue operations continued for a fifth day at the site of the tragedy. He expressed condolences to the families of the victims and thanked rescue personnel. The Zaporizhzhia region declared days of mourning for November 3, 4, and 5. Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defence announced that units of the Dnipro grouping had carried out attacks on Ukrainian forces in Komyshuvakha and other localities further to the southeast.

Police Bodycam Footage Captures Double-Tap Sequence

Ukrainian police published footage recorded by the body-worn camera of an officer who was subsequently killed in the operation. The verified video documents the aftermath of initial explosions as civilians and emergency responders gathered outside the shelter entrance. Moments after a radio warning announced incoming aerial bombs, individuals rushed back underground just before a blast cut off the transmission.

Search and recovery teams spent five days working through a massive crater at the school grounds. Among the dead are six emergency personnel, comprising two rescue workers—identified by name as Denys Konovalenko, who served in civil protection for nearly 12 years, and Oleksiy Sushchevsky, a firefighter since 2013—along with four police officers named Mykhailo Buzhenko, Mykola Balanda, Mykhailo Romanov, and Dmytro Besedin.

Because some victims could not be identified by appearance, specialists collected biological samples from relatives for DNA comparison. Police officers remained in contact with grieving families during the identification process to explain the subsequent procedures.

United Nations Official Condemns Attack on Distribution Center

Danielle Bell, head of the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, stated that the aerial bomb attack on Komyshuvakha during humanitarian distribution likely constitutes a violation of international law, given that the schedule and purpose of the distribution center were publicly known. Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized the international response as insufficient and called for a resolute reaction from global allies.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that after a humanitarian operation in Oleshky, a moment arose when subsequent steps could have demonstrated that progress toward peace was possible, but stated that this killing sent the exact opposite signal.
