Downtown Minneapolis launches Shine on winter campaign with 530 events

Downtown Minneapolis is rolling out a fresh winter initiative designed to showcase new happenings and motivate both locals and visitors to back neighborhood businesses. Shine On Minneapolis is supported by the city of Minneapolis and the Minneapolis Foundation. A total of 530 holiday and winter events will be showcased through the campaign this year, encompassing theatrical performances, shopping, live music, family activities, and holiday markets.

Mayor Jacob Frey announced the initiative on a Thursday afternoon. Shine On builds on the work we’ve already been doing to bring people to this exceptional street, Frey said at the announcement.

The celebration officially starts with a free block party on Nicollet Mall on Nov. 27. The event will take place between Seventh and 12th streets. People can gather at Peavey Plaza for the lighting of the holiday tree. Among the other prominent attractions are a DJ dance party, the World Marshmallow Roasting championship, and the inaugural official snowball toss.

Beyond the holidays

The Winter Kite Festival, the Art Shanty Project, the Luminary Loppet, and the Great Northern Festival are among the additional winter happenings that will persist past the holiday season. Organizers of the campaign say that this is an opportunity for people to visit downtown, and it is also a chance for the public to get involved.

Suggestions and public input regarding desired downtown activities for the upcoming season are currently being sought by the Minneapolis Activation Lab. We’ve seen that arts and culture, here and all over the world, that arts and culture can bring people together, said Sam Utne, director of the Minneapolis Activation Lab. We want to hear those ideas, if you have those ideas and think you can do it, tell us what the idea is and what you need to get it done. We’re here to try and make it happen.
