Missile Interceptions in Riyadh and Khamis Mushait

The Saudi-led Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen announced that its air defense systems successfully engaged and destroyed three ballistic missiles launched from Yemeni territory. According to the coalition’s spokesman, Turki Al-Maliki, two of the projectiles were targeted at the capital, Riyadh, while the third was intercepted over the southern city of Khamis Mushait. The coalition emphasized that the destruction of these threats was part of a broader mandate to protect civilians and critical infrastructure from indiscriminate attacks.

In Riyadh, the interception resulted in falling debris that struck civilian infrastructure. The Saudi Civil Defense confirmed that the impact caused material damage to a nursery and a medical clinic. Diplomatic staff in the capital were also instructed to take shelter within their embassy compounds following the sound of explosions.

Coalition Retaliation and the Destruction of Launch Sites

Following the attacks, the coalition launched a comprehensive military response, destroying 82 targets identified as legitimate military objectives associated with the Houthi movement. Al-Maliki stated that the operation targeted missile storage facilities in the mountainous regions of Saada, as well as command-and-control centers and communication networks in Hodeidah, Al-Jawf, and Marib. The coalition declared that such brutal assaults on civilian objects would not pass without accountability.

The group of targets included sources of ballistic missile threats, among them 11 missile storage facilities in mountainous areas of Saada, in addition to command-and-control centers, communication systems, weapons depots, and headquarters for Houthi groups.

The coalition also released footage of a separate strike on a ballistic missile launcher in Sanaa, which officials claimed was being prepared for an imminent attack against the kingdom. Intelligence systems had reportedly tracked the platform in the Yemeni capital before it was successfully destroyed.

Houthi Spokesman Claims Ballistic Missile Hit Riyadh Airport

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree claimed that the group had targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh with a ballistic missile, alleging that the strike hit its target and disrupted air traffic. However, Saudi authorities have not confirmed these claims regarding the airport’s operational status.

This escalation follows a period of heightened violence earlier in the week, during which attacks on the airports of Abha and King Khalid resulted in three deaths and dozens of injuries. A separate strike on King Khalid International Airport resulted in the death of a Sudanese resident and left eight others injured, including five Saudi citizens and three residents of Egyptian and Pakistani nationality.

The Shift in Yemen’s Military Landscape

The broader conflict in Yemen has persisted since the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, in September 2014, prompting the Saudi-led military intervention in March 2015. International concern is mounting as the conflict moves away from the relative calm that had characterized the period since the April 2022 truce. While the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh has advised citizens to exercise heightened vigilance, regional military committees continue to assess the situation. The ongoing cycle of missile launches and retaliatory airstrikes has sparked fears of a renewed comprehensive conflict that could undermine international peace efforts.
