Jennifer Lawrence has firmly ruled out ever returning to play Mystique in future X-Men films, citing the physical toll of freezing airbrushing, body paint, and glue. The Oscar-winning actress, who played the blue mutant across four movies from 2011 to 2019, made her blunt stance public in a recent interview.

Why Jennifer Lawrence Is Shutting the Door on Mystique

Few superhero transformations required as much physical endurance as turning an actor into a blue-skinned mutant. While promoting her upcoming projects in October 2026, Lawrence was asked during an interview with Allure whether she would ever consider taking on a role that required heavy prosthetics and body paint again. Her response left no room for negotiation.

Never say never, but absolutely f***ing not.

The physical discomfort of the process left lasting memories. Lawrence explained that air brushing is very cold and noted that she is particularly ticklish, making the application process grueling. And patience! The conversation around her and the character has resurfaced just as the X-Men are about to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Eight-Hour Makeup Sessions and Hair Damage From First Class Onward

Lawrence first stepped into the role of Raven Darkholme in X-Men: First Class (2011), kicking off a run that continued through Days of Future Past (2014), Apocalypse (2016), and Dark Phoenix (2019). During appearances on podcasts and late-night shows, she revealed that the initial film required sitting in the makeup chair for eight hours every time to apply body paint and glue.

The transformation demands even reached her hair before filming began. Recalling her screen test to Yahoo, Lawrence noted that stylists dyed her hair red, brown, black, and platinum blond in a single day, permanently damaging her strands. That ongoing hair stress continued as she bounced between franchises, dying her hair red for X-Men films, brown for The Hunger Games, and blonde for other projects like American Hustle in 2013. The 36-year-old Oscar winner previously accepted whatever stylists wanted to ensure she was camera-ready as an upcoming actress, but the constant hair color changes eventually led her to seek out beauty-industry veteran and biologist Jasmina Aganovic to develop biology-first products for her hair care line that launched on October 27 with three items: a restyling serum, a repair mask, and a volumizing mist.

Stunts, Stunt Doubles, and What She Enjoyed About the Franchise

Despite her intense dislike for the blue paint and glue, Lawrence maintained warmth toward other aspects of working on the superhero blockbusters. She repeatedly praised the physical training and stunt work involved in playing the mutant.

My favorite part of playing Mystique was the stunts. It was so fun to train in that way and learn how to move. I had the same stunt double, Renee Moneymaker, who was Katniss. She is one of my best friends, so that was great. My least favorite part was most certainly the paint.

While Lawrence closes the book on her iteration of the shapeshifter, other actors are stepping back into the Marvel fold. Rebecca Romijn, who portrayed Mystique in the original X-Men trilogy, is set to return to the franchise in Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release on December 18, 2026. Meanwhile, Lawrence has also been taking a victory lap for briefly returning to the role of Katniss Everdeen in the upcoming prequel-plus-framing-story Sunrise on the Reaping, which hits the 2026 movie schedule in November.
