Jenny McCarthy recalled attending Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ 2006 wedding on her podcast, claiming the actress appeared uncomfortable and that Cruise attempted to recruit her and Jim Carrey into Scientology, while noting a tense rehearsal dinner incident involving the couple’s infant daughter, Suri.
Nearly two decades after Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes married in a lavish Italian ceremony, podcast host and television personality Jenny McCarthy is revisiting the high-profile nuptials. Speaking on the October 15 episode of her eponymous podcast, McCarthy shared memories from the November 18, 2006 wedding at a castle near Rome. She attended as a guest alongside her then-boyfriend, Jim Carrey. The television personality noted that she and Carrey sat directly across from the bride, groom, and their immediate circle.
McCarthy described a noticeable change in Holmes as the six-year marriage progressed, telling listeners that the Dawson’s Creek star eventually looked like a deer in headlights during her time with the Top Gun star. While Holmes seemed like her usual self around the time of the wedding, McCarthy recalled pulling her aside at subsequent gatherings to check on her well-being. The romance between Cruise and Holmes began with a whirlwind courtship in April 2005, followed by an engagement by June 2005 and the birth of their first child together, Suri, in April 2006.

That best man was David Miscavige, the leader of the Church of Scientology. McCarthy noted that Holmes’ family members wore expressions of utter confusion. Holmes appeared to be forced to keep her smile and endure the lengthy address.

She told him, Haha, you got picked, congratulations,
a remark she noted sounded demeaning and which Miscavige clearly did not appreciate, prompting Cruise to laugh to cover the awkward moment.
The tension had reportedly begun the previous evening at the rehearsal dinner, where McCarthy sat directly across from the bride and groom. When a nanny brought the couple’s newborn daughter, Suri, over to Holmes, McCarthy asked if she could hold the baby.

When the nanny brought the newborn daughter Suri to Katie and asked, ‘May I hold the baby?’ the entire room fell silent in an instant.

McCarthy compared the sudden, freezing hush to a scene from the film Rosemary’s Baby, describing the collective gaze as the Scientology stare. Only after Holmes slowly handed the infant back did guests resume their conversations.
I felt a terror I had never felt in my life, as if I had entered the belly of a monster.

Actor Avoids Religious Group After Receiving Invitations
Anne Gollert Hill spent two decades inside the organization before leaving in 2007 and writing the book Escape To Joy. During her conversation with former Sea Org member Anne Gollert Hill on the podcast, McCarthy detailed how Cruise and his associates interacted with their social circle. She alleged that Cruise attempted to lure her and Carrey into the religious organization. This included multiple invitations for Carrey to visit Cruise’s home in Aspen—invitations that Carrey declined out of concern over recruitment tactics.

McCarthy observed that Cruise was constantly surrounded by handlers from the church who would come over and just follow him from room to room to ensure he did not stray or say the wrong thing. Despite describing Cruise as a very warm and nice human being when met personally, she remarked that he felt distinctly programmed.
Representatives for Cruise and Holmes did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding McCarthy’s assertions. Following their 2006 marriage, Cruise and Holmes divorced in 2012 within just 11 days, after which Holmes left the church and retained custody of Suri, who has since dropped her father’s surname to go by Suri Noelle.
