Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl has returned to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 for a 13th nonconsecutive week, following the Sept. 25 release of its deluxe edition, The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore.

Surprise Tracks Drive Huge First-Week Chart Surge

Swift surprised listeners by dropping four newly recorded tracks: Patient Zero, Cleveland!, Pink Clouding, and Babylon. According to Billboard and Luminate data, the album earned 173,000 equivalent album units in the United States for the tracking week ending Oct. 1. That represents a surge compared to the previous week’s 21,000 units.

Streaming activity drove the majority of that total. On-demand official streams reached 138.79 million, pushing SEA units to 136,000. Traditional album sales accounted for 21,000 units. The reissue vaulted the album from No. 21 right back to the top of the chart.

The nine-month gap between weeks at No. 1 for the record is the longest for an album since earlier this year, when Bad Bunny’s DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS climbed to the top on the Feb. 28-dated chart for its first week at No. 1 in nine months and two weeks. The original 12-track version of The Life of a Showgirl debuted atop the chart dated Oct. 18, 2025, with 4.002 million equivalent album units in the U.S., setting a new record for opening-week total units, and notched its last week at No. 1 on the Jan. 10, 2026-dated ranking.

On the U.K. Official Singles Chart, Patient Zero hit the top spot in its opening week, giving Swift her third No. 1 single of 2026 following Opalite and the Toy Story 5 track I Knew It, I Knew You. Companion tracks Cleveland! and Babylon landed at No. 3 and No. 4 respectively on the U.K. singles tally. On the U.K. Official Albums Chart, the record returned to the top spot for its fifth non-consecutive week at No. 1, having previously spent four weeks at No. 1 upon its initial release in October 2025.

Swedish Studio Sessions Reunite Producers with Swift

The new songs stem from a trip to Sweden where Swift reunited with producers Max Martin and Shellback. Martin and Shellback are co-writers and producers who previously worked with Swift on major hits including We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, 22, Shake It Off, Blank Space, Don’t Blame Me, and Delicate.

About a year ago, you guys did a truly unfathomable thing. Something that completely blew my mind… You gave The Life of a Showgirl the biggest first week for an album in history. I took a trip to Sweden to celebrate with Max [Martin] and Shellback, my two collaborators on this album. Really we just wanted to reflect and take in how grateful we were for the moment we were in, but there was a studio there and we did what we do when we feel anything at all: We wrote more songs.

Swift told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe that the expanded edition captures a lighter persona than her previous work.

The opening track and single, The Fate of Ophelia, reinterprets Shakespeare’s tale as a romance rather than a tragedy, featuring lyrics where the protagonist accepts solitude before a savior appears. The savior figure is likely Travis Kelce, a three-time Super Bowl winner and Swift’s fiancé at the time, whose podcast hosted the album’s announcement. The 70s-punk-infused track Wood mentions a new height of masculinity, while Actually Romantic addresses an anti-fan with playful and teasing lyrics. Another track, Father Figure, serves as a tribute to George Michael featuring breathy vocals and concluding with a betrayal by a protégé.

Critics Debate Quality of Four New Tracks

Critics remain sharply divided over the four new additions.

Variety’s Chris Willman described the compact release as a welcome change of pace, noting that three of the four songs continue Swift’s interest in themes associated with The Tortured Poets Department. The Globe and Mail’s Aisling Murphy argued that the new songs are stronger than much of the original Showgirl material, while The Irish Times dubbed the release superb. Conversely, The Guardian’s Laura Snapes recognized both sweet highs and galling lows while questioning how the tracks relate to the original record, and The Independent’s Roisin O’Connor gave the project two stars, criticizing the songwriting and safe production by Max Martin and Shellback.

U.K. Chart Double and Global Success

Across the Atlantic, the deluxe release generated similar momentum. Swift secured a U.K. chart double on tallies published Oct. 2. Lead track Patient Zero debuted at No. 1 on the Official Singles Chart, marking her third No. 1 single of 2026. Companion tracks Cleveland! and Babylon landed at No. 3 and No. 4.

On the Official Albums Chart, The Life of a Showgirl climbed back to No. 1 for its fifth non-consecutive week at the top. Two days after releasing the deluxe edition on Sept. 25, Swift premiered the music video for Patient Zero during the live broadcast of the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 27, where she also collected the inaugural Artist Director Award, bringing her career total of VMA awards to 31 according to AP and Reuters reporting, moving her ahead of Beyoncé’s 30.

Other entries on the Billboard 200 included Olivia Rodrigo’s you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love climbing 5-2 with 67,000 equivalent album units following her Tour launch on Sept. 25. Ella Langley’s Dandelion dipped 2-3 with 58,000 units, Morgan Wallen’s I’m the Problem remained flat at No. 4 with 56,000 units, and Noah Kahan’s The Great Divide rose 6-5 with 45,000 units. Tinashe achieved her first top 10 album as Popstar debuted at No. 6 with 35,500 units. Country star Kenny Chesney collected his 17th top 10 album as Silver Sands Marina launched at No. 7 with just over 35,000 equivalent album units.
