Amish Shah Flips Arizona 1st District Seat

The political geography of Arizona just shifted. Former Democratic state Representative Amish Shah has defeated former NFL kicker Jay Feely to claim Arizona’s 1st District, according to projections from Decision Desk HQ. This victory flips a seat Shah narrowly lost two years earlier. The district covers Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Fountain Hills, Cave Creek, and parts of northeast Phoenix.

The numbers tell the story of a hard-fought campaign. With more than 95 percent of the ballots reported, Shah secured 52.5 percent of the vote compared to Feely’s 45.5 percent. This outcome flips a seat where Representative David Schweikert (R-Ariz.) beat Shah by 3.8 percentage points in 2024. When Schweikert opted to launch an unsuccessful bid for governor this year, the resulting open seat provided the opening Democrats needed in a district that has proven to be a competitive battleground.

The Suburban Split

To understand why this district is so competitive, you have to look at its internal contradictions. While the area backed President Trump by roughly 3 points in 2024, voters there simultaneously supported Democratic Senator Ruben Gallego by about 5 points. The district was considered one of the most competitive in the country this cycle.

Shah’s path to victory was not a straight line. He had to run a competitive Democratic primary against former broadcast journalist Marlene Galán-Woods, who carried the backing of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC). By securing the nomination despite that institutional friction, Shah positioned himself as an independent operator. Throughout the general election, he leaned into his background as an emergency room physician and his history of working across the aisle in the state legislature, even touting an endorsement from former GOP state House Speaker Rusty Bowers.

Trump Endorsement Shapes Feely Shift to First District

On the other side of the ledger, Feely’s campaign showed the influence of national political figures on local races. A political newcomer, Feely initially launched his bid in the more GOP-friendly 5th District before a direct nudge and endorsement from President Trump led him to pivot to the 1st. While Feely leaned into his alignment with the president’s agenda, he did hit a point of friction when he broke with the administration over proposed cuts to Arizona’s Colorado River allocation.

By September, the momentum had clearly tilted. The Cook Political Report moved the race from a “toss up” to “lean Democrat,” and by the final days of the cycle, Decision Desk HQ had assigned Shah a 76 percent probability of victory. For the suburban communities stretching from Paradise Valley to Cave Creek, the result means a transition from a Republican incumbent to a Democrat who has explicitly campaigned on a record of bipartisan cooperation.

The stakes for this flip extend beyond the single seat. In a closely divided Congress, every district that breaks with its recent presidential voting pattern serves as a signal to both parties about the shifting priorities of independent and moderate suburban voters. As Shah prepares to head to Washington, the focus will now turn to whether his emphasis on independence survives the realities of a polarized legislative session.
