Cougars Overcome First-Half Struggles to Defeat Portland 74-64
Brinley Cannon connected from beyond the arc to cap a dominant 13-0 run, turning a six-point halftime deficit into a commanding 17-point lead as BYU defeated Portland 74-64. After stumbling through a cold-shooting first half where they managed just 31.3 percent from the field and 11 percent from 3-point range, the Cougars flipped the script entirely after the intermission.
The Cougars struggled to find an offensive rhythm early in the contest. Delaney Gibb and Kailey Woolston missed initial looks from deep before Olivia Hamlin converted an uncontested fast-break layup to tie the game at 2-2. Portland responded with back-to-back buckets to build an early 6-2 lead, maintaining pressure through the first quarter and securing a 14-11 advantage by the buzzer. The Pilots extended that margin in the second quarter, opening with a 4-0 run that pushed their edge to seven points.
Stella Sakalas and Prasayus Notoa provided immediate perimeter relief off the bench, sinking back-to-back 3-pointers to close the gap. Even so, Portland answered with another 4-0 run, stretching the score to 27-19. Consecutive baskets from Sydney Benally, Notoa, and Gibb trimmed the deficit to two before a pair of Pilot free throws established a 34-28 halftime score in favor of the visitors.
Third-Quarter Surge Flips the Game
The complexion of the contest transformed entirely in the third quarter. Woolston opened the scoring with a triple, followed immediately by a steal and layup from Hamlin that gave BYU its first lead since the opening period at 35-34. Notoa added a pick-and-roll layup, and Cannon drained a 3-pointer to force a Portland timeout as the lead swelled to 40-35.
BYU did not let up. Notoa recorded another steal and layup, while consecutive 3-pointers from Cannon and Benally pushed the advantage into double digits at 56-44. The closing three minutes of the third frame witnessed a relentless 13-0 offensive explosion by the Cougars, erasing a six-point deficit and building a 17-point lead heading into the final period.

Sealing the Victory
Benally picked up right where the third quarter left off, converting a four-point play by draining a 3-pointer while absorbing a foul to stretch the lead to 20 points at 64-44. Portland mounted a late push, orchestrating a 10-4 run to cut the margin to 12 with 2:48 remaining. Kambree Taylor answered with two free throws to steady the Cougars, and Gibb broke through the Pilots’ late full-court press to find a driving Cannon for a score off the glass, securing an 11-point lead with under a minute to play. Two final free throws from Benally locked in the 74-64 final score.
The Cougars return to the hardwood on Saturday to face Montana at 2 p.m. MST at the Marriott Center, with streaming available on ESPN+ and play-by-play coverage on BYU Radio.
