Citibank Employee Killed in Tampa Office Shooting as Security Guard Shoots Suspect
A Citibank employee was shot and killed inside a Tampa-area office complex on Wednesday when a motorist drove through a fence, crashed into an outdoor seating area, and opened fire with a rifle, local authorities and company officials reported.
The suspect was fatally shot by a security guard during an exchange of gunfire inside the building’s cafeteria, Hillsborough County Chief Deputy Frank Losat said during a press briefing. Authorities received multiple 911 calls reporting an active threat at the property around 12:11 p.m. on November 4, 2026, according to CNBC.
Citigroup Chief Executive Jane Fraser confirmed the fatality in an internal message to staff, stating that the company is cooperating with law enforcement while learning the details of the attack. Fraser also noted that additional security is being deployed across the bank’s other sites as a precaution.
Investigation Into Suspect’s Motive and Vehicle Breach
Investigators are working to determine whether the suspect and the victim knew each other. Sources told ABC News that the assailant may have harbored a financial grievance tied to the bank, though officials cautioned that the inquiry remains fluid.
Earlier on Wednesday, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister posted on social media that preliminary information pointed to a targeted incident. However, Chief Deputy Losat noted during the afternoon press briefing that investigators must continue working through details and that information remains subject to change.
The suspect drove a four-door sedan through a perimeter fence, crashing directly into an outdoor patio where employees were eating lunch. Upon the car coming to rest, the driver exited with a rifle, approached the female employee, and shot her, according to Losat.
Scale of the Response and Witness Interviews
Approximately 3,200 Citibank employees were on the property when the shooting occurred. Law enforcement agencies deployed a massive response featuring heavily armed deputies, armored vehicles, and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
“With that many witnesses, up to 3,200 witnesses, we will be doing interviews well into the night,” Losat said during the briefing.
Four other individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the incident, though authorities stated it remains unclear whether they were struck by the vehicle or caught in the chaos. The security guard who engaged the shooter in the cafeteria was commended by officials for stopping the threat and preventing further casualties.
The sprawling crime scene required authorities to clear every building in the complex, with processing expected to continue into Thursday.
