Controlled Burn Disposes of Explosive Powders in Concord

The Concord Police and Fire departments coordinated with the State Police Bomb Squad on Friday, Oct. 9, to safely dispose of about 40 pounds of degraded explosive powders discovered in a residence on Deacon Hayes Road. The materials, which consisted of smokeless powder and other propellants, were identified by bomb technicians after a local resident alerted authorities to the hazard.

The powders had been legally possessed for the purpose of reloading ammunition but were no longer needed. Concerned about the potential danger posed by the aging chemicals, the resident contacted officials to facilitate their removal. The Concord Police and Fire departments responded to the home to confirm the hazard before requesting specialized support from the State Police Bomb Squad, which is assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Removal and Transport of Explosives

Upon arrival, bomb technicians discovered the materials stored in dozens of canisters. The team safely packaged the powders and transported them from the home to the Concord Compost Site. This location was selected for the disposal process because it offered an open area free of debris, dead vegetation, and other combustible items that could pose a fire risk.

Controlled Disposal Process

Before beginning the operation, all personnel on-site participated in a safety briefing. Technicians carefully emptied the canisters and utilized a remote ignition device to conduct a controlled burn, ensuring the permanent destruction of the materials. Following the burn, the crew of Concord Fire Engine 4 wet down the area to verify that the fire was completely extinguished. The operation concluded successfully with no reported incidents.
