Rep. Dan Goddard, a southeast Kansas lawmaker whose path to the Statehouse followed a 24-year career as a U.S. Air Force pilot and economic developer, died Thursday at the age of 78, kansasreflector.com reported.
A Decade of Legislative Service in Topeka
Goddard, a Parsons Republican, represented his district in the Kansas House starting in 2023. Prior to his House service, he spent four years in the Kansas Senate, holding office from 2017 to 2021 before winning election to the lower chamber in 2022.
From Military Aviation to the Statehouse
Reflecting on his legislative career in an interview with kansasreflector.com after announcing he would not run for reelection this year, Goddard noted that public office was never part of his initial life plan. Instead, he spent over two decades in military aviation before pivoting to economic development work focused on closed military bases.
“I came to Kansas without a political thought in my mind,” Goddard said as his final session in the Legislature came to a close. “There are some great, great people in this chamber on both sides of the aisle. I’ve made friends that I will never, ever, ever forget.”
Bipartisan Tributes From Legislative Colleagues
Following news of his passing, colleagues took to social media to share tributes and recall his bipartisan approach to governance.
Dan was always willing to work together and support good policies, despite us coming from different sides of the aisle.
That sentiment was shared by Senate Minority Leader Dynah Sykes, a Lenexa Democrat running for state insurance commissioner, who wrote in a Facebook post that she remained deeply grateful for his steady kindness and enduring friendship.
A Life Defined by Stewardship and Service
Goddard’s legislative tenure concludes a life defined by military service, regional economic stewardship, and eventual civic participation in Topeka.
