Florida State Dismisses Mike Norvell Following Week 9 Loss to Clemson
So far in the 2026 college football carousel, the largest Power 4 program to make a coaching change is also the fourth. Florida State fired coach Mike Norvell on Sunday, Nov. 1, following a Week 9 loss to Clemson that marked the team’s third in a row.
The decision cuts short a tenure that swung wildly between historic highs and steep declines. Norvell engineered a tremendous two-year stint in 2022-23, guiding the Seminoles to a combined 23-4 record during that span. The program plummeted in 2024 with a 2-10 finish, followed by a 5-7 campaign in 2025 and a 3-4 start to the 2026 season.
Buyout Figures and Program Resources Shape the Search
Florida State historically is one of the top destinations in college football. However, financial realities complicate the search. A reported buyout of around $50 million is owed to Norvell, a figure that complicates the financial terms as the administration looks to reset its footing.
With the search underway, analysts and insiders are monitoring the hot board for potential replacements. Among the early names identified by the staff at Noles247 is Duke head coach Manny Diaz, who holds deep personal and professional ties to the state of Florida.
Manny Diaz Emerges as an Early Candidate with Deep State Ties
Diaz enters the conversation with a strong resume and clear familiarity with the program. Noles247 writer Kolby Crawford highlighted the connections, calling Diaz the FSU alum
and noting that the coach is a Miami native and a 1995 Florida State graduate.
During his first two seasons at Duke, Diaz compiled an 18-9 record, secured the 2025 ACC championship by defeating Virginia in overtime, and agreed to an extension in April that runs through 2031. His prior experience includes a 21-15 stint as the head coach at Miami from 2019 to 2021, alongside two seasons serving as Penn State’s defensive coordinator.
As the coaching search develops, the administration faces critical decisions regarding financial commitments and leadership direction to restore the Seminoles to national contention.
