Josh Shapiro Rallies Democrats in Cumberland County for Final Election Push

As the final five days of the election cycle wind down, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro brought his statewide bus tour to Cumberland County on Thursday night, rallying voters outside the Teamsters & Chauffeurs Union building in Camp Hill, reported. Joined by Lt. Gov. Austin Davis and 10th Congressional District Democratic nominee Janelle Stelson, Shapiro urged supporters to knock on doors and secure votes to flip Republican-held seats in Harrisburg and Washington, D.C.

The push targets a rare political milestone. Shapiro told the crowd that organizing the next five days could hand Democrats a trifecta in the state legislature, a feat not accomplished in Harrisburg since 1992. Highlighting first-term wins such as increased education funding, the Working Pennsylvanians Tax Credit, and an expanded state property tax relief program, the governor framed his reelection race against Republican state Treasurer Stacy Garrity as a choice between forward momentum and stagnation. Pennsylvania is on the rise, Shapiro said. We’re moving in the right direction, and that’s because we lead by bringing people together.

The Battle for the 10th Congressional District

A central focus of the Thursday night rally was the fiercely contested race in the 10th Congressional District between incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Scott Perry and Stelson. A recent poll conducted by The New York Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and Siena University found the candidates deadlocked at 48% heading into the homestretch, though election prognosticators at both the Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball rate the race as leaning toward the Democrats.

Shapiro did not mince words regarding Perry, lambasting the congressman for voting in favor of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which extended tax cuts from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act while cutting federal Medicaid and food assistance spending. He voted to give people at the very, very, very top a huge tax cut, Shapiro told a booing crowd, calling Perry one of the most spineless, gutless followers that I’ve ever come to know.

Stelson, a former broadcast journalist, shared her platform with the Camp Hill audience, pledging to focus on affordability, lower prescription drug costs, protect Medicaid, drive federal dollars back to the district, and vote to end the war in Iran and tariffs imposed by the administration. She also voiced support for term limits, age limits for public officials, and a ban on congressional stock trading. We all need help here at home, and we need somebody to deliver, Stelson said. And God, I hope I’m that person for you.

Shapiro Emerges as a Potential 2028 Presidential Candidate

Writing for American Greatness, commentators point out that Shapiro’s strong electoral standing in a critical swing state makes him a standout figure for the Democratic Party as it looks toward the 2028 presidential landscape. Having defeated his 2022 Republican opponent by 14 points—attracting crossover support from a notable share of registered Republicans—Shapiro maintains a brand of bread-and-butter competence demonstrated by swift infrastructure recoveries, such as the rapid reopening of I-95.

At the same time, the commonwealth’s structural dynamics remain fiercely competitive. Republicans continue to control the state Senate and sit just two seats away from retaking the Pennsylvania House, while voter registration trends increasingly favor the GOP. Whether Thursday night’s rally in Camp Hill marks the beginning of a historic Democratic trifecta in Harrisburg or merely a skirmish in an enduringly divided swing state remains to be decided at the ballot box.
