Progressives Secure New York House Seats in Midterm Shift

Progressive candidates endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani secured decisive victories in their campaigns to join the United States Congress, solidifying a political shift in the region.

The newly elected politicians—Brad Lander, Darializa Avila Chevalier, and Claire Valdez—won seats in the 120th Congress representing the 10th, 13th, and 7th districts, respectively. All three were considered shoo-ins following the state’s June 23 party primaries due to their heavily Democratic districts. Their wins follow Mayor Mamdani’s own victory as a Democratic socialist in the 2025 mayoral race.

To me, the national story is about this new generation of progressive leaders and getting excited about those who will be inspired by them just as they were inspired by Mamdani, Adin Lenchner, a progressive political strategist for Carroll Street Campaigns, told Al Jazeera.

Representatives Discuss Halting Military Aid to Israel

Addressing the public on Tuesday, the three representatives-elect discussed President Donald Trump’s pledge earlier in the day to cease annual military aid to Israel by the end of the year. Cutting off such aid formed a central pillar of all three candidates’ policy platforms in opposition to Israel’s war in Gaza.

I don’t know that we can trust this president to make moral and consistent decisions about our military budget, so we’ll have to see, Valdez told Al Jazeera outside a polling location in her district on Tuesday afternoon.

Valdez transitions to Congress from the state assembly, having started her political career in the labour movement with a platform centered on easing union organization. She defeated Republican community activist Melvin Rivera in a lopsided race. Meanwhile, U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, first elected in 2018, handily won her House race in the 14th congressional district.

Additional House victories included New York Assembly member Micah Lasher winning his first term in Congress after defeating Republican challenger Caroline Shinkle. Incumbent Representative Grace Meng in Queens also secured re-election against Republican Joseph Chou, describing the broader Democratic midterm sweep as a mandate rather than just a promotion.

He has not treated Congress like a third and independent branch of government and is just going around doing whatever he wants, Meng told Al Jazeera regarding President Trump, adding that pushing back on the executive branch remains a primary goal for the new Congress.

Leadership Prospects and the New York Gubernatorial Race

New York Democrats are also pressing for Hakeem Jeffries, the longtime representative for the state’s 8th congressional district and current House minority leader, to be selected as House speaker. If chosen by his colleagues, Jeffries would become the first Black speaker in the history of the lower chamber of Congress.

We are going to course-correct, and my good friend Congressman Hakeem Jeffries is set to wield the speaker’s gavel, New York State Attorney General Letitia James stated after winning her own re-election bid on Tuesday.

Beyond the 26 members elected to the House of Representatives, voters decided crucial state and local posts. Incumbent Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul secured another term in Albany by defeating Republican Bruce Blakeman, a lawyer and executive for Nassau County who campaigned on tax cuts and immigration reform.

With Tuesday’s outcome, Hochul and Adrienne Adams—who previously served on the New York City Council—became the first all-woman ticket to win election as governor and lieutenant governor in the history of the Empire State. Hochul has held her position since 2021.

During her victory speech, Hochul directed comments at Trump, who campaigned heavily for Republicans in the state. Just a few weeks ago, Donald Trump came to New York and told voters to pretend he was on the ballot, Hochul said. Well, Mr President, you got your wish.

Hochul’s new term begins on the first day of January, while the newly elected congressional leaders are scheduled to be sworn in on January 3, 2027.
