Salem High School Wrestling Coach Under Investigation
A Salem High School wrestling coach is currently the subject of an investigation following allegations that he sent inappropriate messages to a former student via social media. According to documentation from the Ohio State Board of Education, the mother of a 17-year-old girl discovered the messages on Snapchat. The student, who graduated earlier this year, had been coached by Drew Hart for at least three years during her time at the school.
Documentation indicates that the student continued to wrestle outside of school, with Hart serving as an independent coach for tournaments. Because these interactions occurred in both school and independent training capacities, the oversight process has involved multiple agencies, including the Salem Police Department and Columbiana County Children’s Services.
Coach Defended Student Training Sessions During School Review
The school’s internal review included an interview with assistant coach Patrick Simpson. According to documentation provided by the school, Simpson stated that his understanding was that the additional training sessions were intended to help the student develop her skills for collegiate-level wrestling. Simpson further noted that he did not see or overhear Hart engage in any conduct unbecoming of a coach during their time working together.

A police report was filed with the Salem Police Department in June. Following the filing, the school notified Hart that wrestling training was suspended until further notice. Records indicate that Hart did not reapply to coach the 2026-27 wrestling season.
Current Status of the Investigation
At this time, no one is facing any charges. Detective Brad Davis of the Salem Police Department confirmed to 21 News that the investigation is ongoing. The specific content of the alleged messages has not been disclosed.
